A new deal for Warner

Club officials have had very preliminary discussions with the agent for Kurt Warner about a contract extension, said Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent.

Cardinals GM Rod Graves confirmed the news but cautioned that the discussions are very preliminary. I'll have a story up soon on azcentral.com with details.

This could be a good move for both sides. Warner has a cap figure of $5 million this year-- $ 4 million in salary, $1 million in bonus. By converting some, or all, of that salary into signing bonus and extending the deal, the Cardinals could save $2 million or $3 million in cap space.

An even better move would be to trade Mr. "I Want to Be Here but Reject the richest contract for a WR in the league" Fitzgerald. I will be so pissed if RG doesn't smarten up and trade this guy.

Give him the money, up front. if he is traded you guys will be screaming and yelling when Fitz goes to another team. We need to do the smart thing: sign the kid, wait two more seasons and trade Q. I love Quan, but Fitz is younger, scores more TD's and is less injury prone. Keep #11!!!

LOL, the richest WR contract in the league? 25 - 30 mil guaranteed over 5 years isn't that great unless the salaries are 5 or 6 mil a year, in which case you don't reduce his cap number as much.

How the heck did this turn into a Fitz thread?

I hope Warner can stay here for the rest of his time, he's a guy I'm comfortable backing up Leinart.

That is for another thread. Enough with the Fitz talk.

That is good news about Warner.

But an extension? How long is the bonic QB gonna play for?

But that is good news.

They don't need more money to restructure Fitz. This move is strictly to clear a little space to add another FA and it will only clear 2 mil or so, so it won't be much of a FA signing.

Q scored one less TD that Fitz this season, and had he not been injured, would've put up better numbers than Fitz accross the board...

Chillar maybe?

I know Warner wants to retire here. Extending him 2 years would do it. I'd be very pleased if this happens. If Leinart goes south, it gives us time to get another QBOF.

I hope it's to sign Chillar. Warner will get it done by Friday if they ask him to, so long as he gets the guaranteed money.

Talking about on a consistant basis, year in year out.
Fitz-34 TDS in 4 years
Q-29 TDS in 5 years

Look at who the go to in the red zone? Fitz!!! On the fade, Fitz is nearly unstoppable.

Warner has been great here(When we can block for him).

Extend him for as long as he think he wants to play. He is a great backup, & a damn good stater still.

Thank you Warner

Seems like Warner is doing this to help the team save some cap space. Warner is a leader and even knowing Leinart has been named the tenative starter wants to help the team. Team player, showing some serious Cardinal love by doing this and I'm glad he is with the team. Pay attention Larry, fans of the team you say you love appreciate stuff like this.

Sign Warner for as long as he wants to play then have a clause that guarentees him a QB coach position if he wants it.

Idiot, idiot, idiot, Graves.

Why could this have done been done a month ago?

What difference does it make? He thought Fitz was going to redo his contract. He didn't need to do this. Now we've thrown dollars into a future year again and everyone will be complaining about our bad cap situation in the following years.

This would be great if it happens. Cut Shipp and Holt and now you got something to work with.

BTW, if Warner would have started the whole season, he would have been a pro bowler and broken almost every passing record for the Cardinals.

I wouldn't be surprised if this idea came from Kurt's side to help the Cardinals sign an FA or two since we all know how tight cap space is with the Fitz situation. He did it a number of time in St.Louis.

Convert most of the salary to a signing bonus and extend him two years. Maybe it will free enough money to re-sign B.J.
