Didn't mean to insult, DS. The point about bad coaching under Solomon is valid.

He might have set NFL record for false starts

No, that honor probably belongs to Flozell Adams of Dallas.

And thanks for giving me yet another opportunity to post that the Cards had more false starts last season without Davis than in 2006 with him. :D

Considering the hard feelings that appear to have been generated over a contract extension with Davis during the 2006 season and the huge sums of money being thrown around in free agency the last two years I doubt Whisenhunt and Grimm had any say in what happened with him.

By the time they were hired LD was for all intents and purposes already on another team.

I think that Mike Rosenthal of the Giants had like 18 false starts two years ago.

EDIT: I guess it was like Pettigout with 10. That same season, it looks like Davis had 12. Man, what a disaster. Funny that Davis was on a better run-blocking line at the end of last season than at any point this year.

Here's an interesting note on the Cardinals and false starts. Of the 30 Cardinal false start penalties I noted from looking at the 2007 play by play on nfl.com, 19 were while Arizona was playing at home!!!

Good God, has everyone missed the point of this thread? This isn't about moving Rolle to saftey. It's about him having a real coaching staff for the first time in his career and playing better. He was playing CB when he had those 2 huge games.

He was playing CB but in a "scheme" not just straight CB.

I am the last person to defend Richard Solomon's "Coaching" but remember before Rolle got hurt his rookie year, in camp, all we read about him was the same thing, he's going to set an NFL record for pass interference if he doesn't change the way he plays. He played bump and hold, blitz, grab etc at Miami and got away with it. He came into the NFL the year that sort of defense was cracked down on, it was a "point of emphasis." SO the Cards drafted a CB who's entire technique was now against the rules, and gave him a "coach" who basically just threw him out there and said get better.

Then he got hurt and started playing 20 yards off guys and things snowballed.

I never thought he was a CB, never will, but there's no question the improvements we saw this year was because of real coaching(and probably because Rolle realized he HAD to change if he wanted to play).

I don't think he'll ever be a traditional CB he still gets beaten way too easily in man coverage, but he's got some talent. What impressed me was the picks, in college he wasn't a guy who had a lot of picks he wasn't a ball hawk, he's shown some potential for being one now in some sort of hybrid nickel CB/S spot.

Even more strange. The only two games where the Cards didn't have a false start were @ Baltimore and @ Washington.

Must have had something to do with Cardsfanmd.

Correct. And only 1 in New Orleans as well.

Yet they had 7 combined in the back to back games at the Frat House against SF and Cleveland. Pope had 5 of the 11 road penalties by himself. Go figure.

This is Wiz's first year, correct? Didn't Davis play for Dallas this year?

Never mind. these threads get dumber and dumber as they get highjacked. This team played better than it has in some time. I might be slipping a bit, but I think taking coaching OUT OF THE EQAUTION, would make it unworkable.;

The only thing clear in Whiz's end of season comments was that they had to find ways to get Antrell on the field.

My sense is that he'll be a sort of ball hawking rover in nickel and dime packages.

That seems to be where he excels. Worth a HIGH first round pick??!!! NO. But if that's where his talent falls...by all means, let the man play in those situations.

I think you nailed it Canuck, a ball-hawking nickel back seems to be Rolle's forte. Shame on us for drafting a corner with 4.8 40-speed with the number 8 overall pick!!!!

everyone wants rolle at safety, anything else is a waste of time.

That is why it keeps being brought up.

I think the problem is that when he was playing cornerback, even this season, on the outside (where he was drafted to play), he got abused by even marginally above-average wideouts like Roddy White.

Yes, maybe here he can be an okay third safety and nickel back, like a really expensive Aaron Fransico. Maybe if he'd gone to a Tampa-2 defensive scheme like the Bucs or Colts, he would have been in the Pro Bowl. But here, as a Top 10 pick and a guy who got a lot of hype coming out of college, he's a liability as even a #2 cornerback.

Still. Playing better isn't enough for a guy who had the 6th-highest salary cap number on the team and made $2.43 million in salary alone this season. And I say this as a guy who still wears his jersey to games.
