It isnt always s product of a great pass rush. There is also things called coverage sacks that happen very often. It is very much so a symbyotic relationship.

Also whom do you say we should sign to improve this pass rush in free agency. You want us to not improve in another area of need to save money to sign Whom? We cant count the chickens before they have hatched and that is exactly what you would be doing if you dont sign McFadden for the hope of maybe signing a pass rusher in free agency that isnt even out there.

Well put.:raccoon:

Rocky Bernard strikes as a, not elite, but pretty good rusher. An upgrade on Antonio Smith, I'd suggest.

Is he coming for a visit before McFadden? Do you not sign a CB that is coming in Monday on the HOPE that you MIGHT be able to sign Bernard later?

Again you cannot count your chickens before they have hatched in free agency. Or you will be sitting on your hands with your thumb pointed north having not signed the CB but also come to find out later you cant sign the DT either.

The break down in that SuperBowl drive had more to do with Pendy and the scheme and the fact that Big Benny eluded some sacks. As far as players in the secondary...it really comes down to a large extent the amount of pressure the frontline can put on the QB because as the rules are now in favor of the WR, if you do not get to the QB soon it is almost impossible for any corner to cover in the current situation

perfectly said.....it is the front 7 that makes the db's "diva's" or "burnt toast."

Shutdown corners can help the DL by not allowing wrs to get open hence the QB runs out of time and gets sacked or hurries his throw.

Explosive DLs help the DBs by putting pressure on the qb and not allowing him time to set and throw.

IMO the bottom line is that an outstanding group of DBs can be equally important as an outstanding team of pass rushers.

It certainly can be debated. You can find examples of both working with Super Bowl teams. Balance of quality DBs & DLs obviously works best.

If the Cards get McFadden they will have one hell of a good DB group. It will certainly make the defense better.

I think everyone on this board wants us to sign McFadden except for AZSouth Endzone and a few others who, for some reason, feel the need to make a point of not doing anything positive in free agency.

One of our greatest needs is in our secondary and we have a chance to do something about it. If McFadden leaves town without a contract, only AZSouthEndzone will be thrilled.

I feel affirmed that JoeShmo, who knows more about Free Agency than anyone, agrees.

IMO we have a good stable in our dl/olb. Could we upgrade a piece, sure. I did want to keep A.Smith, but knew it would be impossible.

That said, you can probably get McFadden for an extra 1-1.5 per season than what the texans gave A.Smith.

So in a sense if we were to get McFadden, you'd basically just be substituting the salary to retain A.Smith with McFadden to better our secondary.

For a more balanced roster, we'd sacrifice some dl to improve our secondary. I feel we were relatively deep in our dl/olb with NFL quality starters/subs, but weren't that way with our secondary.

Thus to me, tactically speaking it would appear to be a good move.

Be interesting to see how much he wants, and if we sign him.

Timm, that's strong hyperbole for a DB with less than 1 season as a starter. You overstate but feel free to hyperventilate anyway. 'Tis the season.

I wouldn't really say that we have a 'stable' at OLB. In fact, that's a huge position of need for us.

Yeah I was lumping them together

I meant more of when we go with the 3-4 grouping (our 2 ends and 2 olbs can create pressure) we have a sufficient 'stable' of players capable of successfully running the system when we go that way.

I feel we could upgrade to be better, but the talent we have are all decent quality. I.E. I guess overall what I was saying is, even our 2nd-3rd string guys are serviceable. So in that sense it isn't imo a need, but more of a want.

It is more of a need without A. Smith, and potentially B. Berry, but I guess I'm still thinking we bring back Berry on a 1-2 year ~vet min contract, and assuming we draft someone (and hopefully they're decent).

I still don't think we have a sufficient stable of players. Laboy is made of glass, Berry isn't under contract, Haggans isn't under contract, and Okeafor isn't the man any more.

I'm all for getting better and adding more. :)

Thought haggans was on a 2 year deal, my bad.

TL is a concern, but I have hope that he plays more like the beginning of the season (including preseason) rather than the middle. Okeafor I still see as serviceable.

There are question marks, and my position is up in the air with assumptions on Berry and Haggans being retained. Might not happen though. We need at least one with A. Smith gone, add another for each of the others that don't return.

The overall talent level if those 2 are retained is pretty good. I don't feel we'll squeeze too much more out unless someone of much higher talent comes around. Interchangeable parts with similar talent that is sufficient to generate a good but not top notch pass rush. Sucks about T. Sizzle, he would have been perfect imo.

If it is a fair deal..go for it. Lets not act like McFadden is Deion Sanders or Aeneas Williams. The guy became a starter in 2008. He is a perfect example of a FA cashing in. He could be a great addition but lets not get carried away. I like quality draft picks like Aeneas Williams in round 3, Dockett in round 3, and Dansby in round 2 over over priced FA. A draft pick you control for about 5 years with multiple safety guards. A bust FA you are on the hook for big time dead cap space. I am all for FA signings as long as they are smart and upgrade the team. I am not in favor of making rediculous overpriced spashes just to sell tickets or to make message board hacks happy.

What do you consider a fair deal? How much per season should we offer?

Yeah, I think we actually would have spent to get Suggs. Oh well. Even if we retain those two, we're still not solid IMO. We need a real impact pass rushing OLB. Laboy is good at it, but he's mostly a one-trick pony, and as mentioned stays hurt a lot. The other guys just don't have it any more, IMO.

So one of the crucial cogs of our frontline leaves without even an attempt by us to sign him. Campbell and Iwebema are now on the spot and we better hope against hope for health on the D-Line.

In addition, we don't sign Bart Scott, who would have strenthened our LB Core.

We also don't make a run at Ward or Taylor and we let Arrington go without a peep; This FORCES us to draft a RB in the first round rather than a pass-rusher

So this is it; Sign McFadden and improve the secondary or watch the D take a tremendous step backwards.

If the front office doesn't use a portion of the tremendous amount of cap room to improve a secondary that cost us the superbowl, something is very wrong in the front office

So, we let a good, but not great player get overpaid when we have a replacement in hand. In response, we better severely overpay for a Corner who may or may not beat out our Hood. Hey, if we can get McFadden for reasonable, great. But the only way to "not let him leave" is to overpay. You can't do that while continuing to sign Dansby to one year deals, and waiting around on Kurt - the troops aren't going to be too happy when your not moving on your "core players", and overpaying for an outside player.
