Chopper,
Obviously most of you forget that it was the Mannings who went and talked to the Chargers, and afetr that talk asked them PRIVATELY if they would trade the pick to the Giants so Eli could play there.
And why should the Chargers have to accomodate to what the Mannings want?
As many people have pointed out. The purpose of the draft is to not only introduce new talent into the NFL. But to help the weaker teams by giving them the chance to draft the best talent coming out of college football.
Players should not be able to dictate where they want to play. Even if they make these requests in private or public. It defeats the entire purpose of the draft.
If I was apart of the Chargers, I sure as hell wouldn't bend over backwards to the wishes of a player that basically said "your not a good enough team for me to play for".
Now in this situation, keeps this in mind.
1-The Chargers had been trying to deal the pick for the past 2 months.
2-Even when considering staying and picking at 1, the Chargers never commited to one player.
3-Marty will be fired by the end of next year because of a lack of immediate help. So the QB in San Diego will have to learn 2 offenses in 2 years.
This is a moot point because we don't know what the Chargers situation was and we may never find out.
Now we get to the classless organization. What does the San Diego Chargers do instead of making the deal without leaking the info. The Chargers tell the press about the situation so that if they screw up the first round, they are not held accountable. They get justification from the media for not drafting or keeping Eli Manning.
There where already rumors about Eli not wanting to play for the Chargers. The Chargers never said the rumor was true. However, Eli's agent and the Manning family validated this rumor.
On draft day, instead of making the trade at the 1 spot. They draft Manning allow him to go on stage and be booed, as well as creating uncertainty for Rivers who gets picked by the Giants and then is traded.
Actually, this was a very smart move... Bussiness wise. By drafting Manning they knew they had the Giants by the balls and where calling Mannings bluff of sitting out the 2004 season.
NY gave up ALOT to get Manning. The Chargers got some great picks and the player they wanted all along.
How was this not smart?
And in the process, showed Eli that no player is above the draft or the NFL. No player that hasn't played a single down in the NFL should be able to dictate anything.
