So, reading through the tea leaves, here are my thoughts on what I feel the Cardinals are going to do in this draft.

1-There are very few players the Cardinals will actually value in round 1.

-Paxton Lynch-QB: Revisionist history or not, the Cardinals acknowledgement of the differences between college and the pro in the DJ Humphries case makes me believe that drafting and developing a QB is more of an option than it has been in the past with Arians. Lynch has size, arm strength, and showed some accuracy. If Arians believes the tools are there, Keim will pull the trigger.

-Cody Whitehair-OL: The Cardinals have made a priority of upgrading the offensive line since Keim and Arians took over. What we have seen from the players that they have added is a preference for consistency and availability. Whitehair offers more of both of these than Ryan Kelly. I don't believe the Cardinals will stand pat and select Kelly in round 1. I do believe they would take Whitehair if they thought he could transition to C, especially with Mathis signed and who could make the line calls.

-Vernon Butler-DL: The Cardinals do not feel that NT is a huge priority for the team so I don't believe they would stand pat and draft Jarran Reed, Kenny Clark, or A'Shawn Robinson. Butler on the other hand offers length and pass rush ability that these players have not shown and is not currently on the Cardinals roster. This makes Butler a real possibility for the Cardinals at 29.

-Leonard Floyd-OLB: Floyd looks the part, but needs to develop physically. That is for certain. But, similar to Paxton Lynch, the Cardinals are very aware of the rarity that size/speed rush prospects are available. If Floyd was available, the Cardinals will jump at the chance to add a player who they can have fill a role early as a pure pass rusher while he builds his body to handle a larger role.

-Eli Apple-CB: The Cardinals preach how much the value length which is why they signed Cro when they had Powers already outside, and signed Bethel to a deal despite struggling at times. Eli offers size, speed, and experience which is rare. The Cardinals would pick Apple if he was available at 29 because of scheme fit, size, athleticism, and experience vs major competition.

With that in mind, most of these players are projected to be gone when the Cardinals pick. This leaves the most likely scenario for the Cardinals in round 1 which is a trade back. The more I dig into Kelly, the more he seems to mirror the frustrations the Cardinals had with Cooper. Also, there are other options at C which could be had later in the draft. None of the edge players really show much quickness difference from Markus Golden. Also, looking at the number of open positions in 2017, the Cardinals will be looking to add multiple players to fill out that roster. The more draft picks, the more options. My guess is that the Cardinals trade back, adding either a 3rd or 2nd (if lucky). From their they open their options to a much larger number of players who offer solid potential but with a little more risk.

Of the five players you mentioned, I think DT Vernon Butler would be the top and clear choice.

I just don't see the need to use a 1st round pick on a QB who is going to sit for 2 years behind Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton.

G/C Whitehair is a possibility, but could he learn a new position, BA's offense and all the nuances enough to start immediately? As you say, Mathis could make the line calls---but he too will be learning BA's offense for the first time. Certainly, Whitehair could be the guy to slide in at RG after Mathis leaves. SK is always thinking ahead to those types of scenarios. The interesting thing is---if Humphries struggles at RT, Whitehair might wrest the job away from him. I think he could play a solid RT. Thus, his versatility is very attractive.

I don't see OLB Floyd as being a viable option for SK. I could see Kevin Dodd, for sure. But not Floyd.

Eli Apple worries me (about being the "picked on" CB opposite Patrick Peterson)---every time I watched him it made me cringe to see how often he had his mitts on the WR. But the athleticism and intensity are very appealing.

My latest theory about the Cardinals' draft approach is that we are going to see the Cardinals take a player from the Fiesta Bowl National Championship (Alabama versus Clemson)---where MB&BA&SK were in attendance and where seeds of interest in the available draftees were being planted.

So---I've been watching the game very closely and the offensive players who are standing out are:

RB Derrick Henry---anyone who thinks this kid is slow or hesitant, go back and watch this tape. His 1st quarter TD run was a thing of beauty---he showed great vision to sidestep away from the original hole (that was stuffed), then saw a crease to his right and just exploded upfield right through the second and then third levels.

C Ryan Kelly---plays tough and hard and gets downfield to make and finish blocks. Good crisp snaps and get offs...sometimes his get offs are a little too quick and he loses his angles and leverage.

On defense:

DT A'Shawn Robinson---played over the outside shoulder of the guard in this game, which surprised me a little, given I thought they would use him mostly at NT. Robinson was effective and seemed to get stronger as the game progressed. He could chase laterally a little better than he did, which concerned me about playing off of the guard. But in short areas he is dominant.

DT Jarran Reeed, played more snaps over the center and in the A gaps---he too is well-built, strong inside tackle. Good tackler---really bottled things up. Would like to see him be more of a pass rusher, but he has the talent.

DE Shaq Lawson---was playing with a sprained MCL and was lining up in the neutral zone early on while adjusting to a revised stance. But, man, he played his tail off in this game---stringing out plays and getting after the QB. His intensity is outstanding. If he sheds a little weight in the midsection and gets chiseled up, he is going to be some kind of edge force in the NFL.

DE Kevin Dodd---not only was he matching Lawson's intensity, he was basically slipping blocks and making plays every chance he got. Very quick feet in the pass rush and with good size and angular strength.

LB Reggie Ragland---he looks like he can play 34 SILB and 34 SOLB because he is so strong versus the run and he can rush the QB. He seems a little slow to lock in on his man or zone in coverage, however---not far off, but just enough to be a step or two away from making plays.

CB Mackenzie Alexander---was flying up to make tackles on Bama's short passing game to the RBs and slot WRs. Got caught in no-man's land a couple times and gave up too much cushion at times in off-coverage. Looks like he could be a superb press CB---he's quick and very aggressive.

The only hole on the roster IMO is CB. I'm betting on Bethel to be much improved this year but we still don't have a #3 CB and if Bethel falters then we need a #2. Honey Badger is coming off an ACL so I won't count on him for the slot at this time.

OC needs upgrading but it's not a "hole". A player that adds depth to the Oline. Safety as it stands now has a hole but I'm sure TJ will be back and that fills the "hole".

IMO everything else is trying to upgrade or get the QBOTF.

I'll be honest and say I have no idea what they're going to do. I personally think we've painted ourselves into needing a starting C, a starting NT, a starting or rotational ILBer, and more defensive front help in the draft. But, BUT, I don't think the team agrees with my analysis (surprising, huh? lol).

So, who can say?

I haven't watched much Lynch, but I have seen a lot of Hogan as well.

I think his ceiling is long term back up and thats it. I've never watched Stanford and thought "this guy is NFL starting material".

Hogan had three mediocre-to-bad seasons and had a decent Senior season. Very, very limited upside.

OC needs upgrading

Don't mean to pick out your post in particular but it's driving me crazy that everyone has started to use "OC" to describe the center position (and, to a much lesser extent, "OG" for guard). There's no defensive center or guard position. "OC" always makes me think of Offensive Coordinator.

What the heck is wrong with "C" for Center?!?!?

/rant off :)

You do remember that guy named Blogan Thomas don't you? IMO Cardelle ain't much better. Personally I think The hogs Brandon Allen is a hidden gem & who I'd take a shot on in RDs 3 or 4

I like Brandon Allen too. My problem with Cardale is, can he process information quickly enough to play QB in the NFL? That's a trait that's hard to determine from the outside looking in but also is a big a factor as any when it comes to success in the NFL. I think the same could be questioned with Lynch.

I'm with Bucky regarding Cardelle Jones. Far greater bust potential than upside!

I get that he is a specimen physically, and played great in a three game stretch in 2014. But he has only started 8 games in college; and there is good reason that the Buckeyes switched away from Jones as their starter last season.

His first name is tailor made for being a Cardinal though! ;)
