I believe Carson needs 70+ yards this Sunday to set the single-season record for yardage. Just wanted to mention...Neil Lomax...the current record-holder. I honestly believe Neil was every bit as talented as Dan Marino, his AFC counter-part at the time. The difference? Marino had much better players around him (though Roy Green was nothing short of AMAZING!)

At the end of the day...Dan Marino went to the Hall of Fame and Neil Lomax needed a hip-replacement.

Take your place in history Carson...very well-deserved...but an honorable mention to Neil.

Quality post NSDF. Typical Cards luck that they draft a stud QB in the 2nd rd and he ends up having hip issues that shortens his career.

Should mention...Pat Tilly, as well...

Great line by Lomax re: ...Pat's like 7-11...He's ALWAYS! open! :)

If there was ever a point this franchise was cursed, that was it. They were 7-4 and in first place in the division if I remember, and it was all down hill after that.

That '84 team when Lomax set that record was good enough to win the Lombardi that year IMO. Nobody had an answer for Lomax to Green. Damn you Neil O'Donoghue!

Btw don't think Lomax had just Jetstream...because Tilley was damn good & sneaky fast, Marsh was underrated at TE, the Juice was dangerous running & receiving, Ferrell was a stud FB & the Dline might have been the NFL's best.

To me that was the best all around Redbird team talent wise until the 2015 Redbirds arrived. This team is a whole different animal & in 40 more days will make them along with us proud when the finally win the Super Bowl. :D
Go Big Red :newcards:

Good thread. :)

When the Cardinals finally win a Super Bowl, (not saying it's a lock to happen this year, but one would think it will happen, sooner or later lol) but whenever that time finally comes I would love to see great Cardinals from all the ages be there at the ring ceremony.

Just a tip of the hat to guys like Green, Lomax, Plummer, Aeneas, basically all the guys who were long time Cardinals who poured their hearts out for (mostly) bad teams and took pride in being Cardinals.

I remember sitting on the frozen bleachers at Sullivan Stadium (now Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA) to see the Cardinals versus Patriots---and Neil Lomax, despite the freezing temp, put on a passing clinic in that game. When you watched him in person, man, the ball came out of his hand so cleanly and effortlessly and with such spin and accuracy. On that particular day, his passes to Jay Novacek over the middle and to the sidelines were a thing of beauty.

Great post, Mark! Man, I loved Neil Lomax!

He was plagued by injuries as well as huge bouts of inconsistency. I remember in 1986 when he got benched in favor of Cliff Stoudt in a game against Philly. However, when he was on, he was on. Several games stand out. One in particular was against Tampa in 1987, my one and only game live in St. Louis. Cards were down 28-3 going into the 4th quarter and he threw 3 TD passes sandwiched around a Niko Noga fumble recovery, the last to JT Smith to cap one of the biggest regular season comebacks in history. Another game was the shootout with Marino in 1984 not to mention the gem in our first season in AZ with the great comeback win over SF.

Yep, sucked me right in and set me up for nearly 3 decades of misery.

Oh well, I love this team, and really, the past 10 seasons with a few exceptions haven't really been that bad.

Go Cards!!!
Since Micheal took over and the stadium opened it's been a totally different franchise. Papa B always said their own stadium would help, but he got the shaft on the hand shake (to move the team here and a new stadium).

Neil Lomax was awesome and I loved him, but this team and franchise went into the tank for 3 decades after Don Coryell left in 76. Coryell was a HOF coach. I was a huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals but when he left I was a huge Chargers fan (sorry!). What he did with Dan Fouts and Charlie Joyner, Jefferson and Kellen Winslow, OMG. Chuck Muncie and Ron Bernerskia (sp). Coryell changed football, turned it into a passing league. He was ours, like so many coaches and players, but we let him go. When he left, I went with him to the Chargers. I came back in 88 because I was glad to have a team, but we've sucked ever since, until 2008/09 and this year.

Pretty sure it was after the '77 season. I remember watching them for the 1st time live on MNF in Dallas & we beat them I think 24-17 to go to 7-3 & the Big Red didn't win another game & finished 7-7. I believe Coryell & his staff were locked out of their offices after the last game & fired because Mr B didn't want to give him more say so in the draft & a pay raise.

Great memories of those teams & players.

My mistake, it was '77 as you said.

After that Dallas win, the Cards didn't win another game until week 9 of the following season. I was in attendance at that game. My first ever live football game.

Very close but not quite. The Coryell years are when i became a fan of football and the Cardinals as well, even as a kid living in Eagles country and in an era when everyone i knew were Cowboys, Vikings, Rams, Steelers, Raiders, Dolphins, or Broncos fans. (Strangely, I didn't know a lot of Eagles or Colts fans, which were the two closest teams.)

I remember that Monday night game too - so exciting! MNF was such a big deal back then... hearing that music starting to crescendo gave me goosebumps, and watching with my dad was one of my favorite memories. So i looked it up (gotta love Pro Football Reference!) and it turns out that the win over the Cowboys on MNF took the Cardinals to 6-3 after a 1-3 start. One more win the following week over the Eagles made it 7-3, and THEN the bottom dropped out... for the next 20 years!

It started with another game i vividly remember watching - the Cardinals getting HAMMERED on Thanksgiving day by the Dolphins, 55-14. And that season ended with a loss to the Buccaneers, who thankfully had won their first game ever as a franchise the previous week, after starting 0-26.

Living through the intervening years makes those of us who became Cards fans during the Coryell era appreciate what we're experiencing right now more than fans of most teams can even imagine! Great memories indeed.
