DAYTON — Dunbar High School senior basketball star Aaron Pogue was moved to a private room in the ICU unit at Miami Valley Hospital on Thursday morning and is in critical condition, said his mother, Sharita Pogue.
Pogue was shot Wednesday night while sitting in a parked car in a bank parking lot on Salem Avenue. Dorian Hoover, a former Sinclair Community College basketball player, was shot in the foot during the incident, which is under investigation.
According to Sharita Pogue, a bullet is lodged two-to-three centimeters from her son's spine. Doctors have advised not to remove the bullet, she said. Also, a tube has been inserted to remove fluid from Aaron Pogue's right lung.
"He's conscious, but he's in and out from all the medication, for the most part," Sharita Pogue said Thursday. "Right now, they're concerned with the right lung and fluid on his spine."
Dunbar boys basketball coach Pete Pullen and former teammate and Ohio State guard Daequan Cook were among the many visitors at MVH on Wednesday night.
"The traffic (people visiting) was pretty outrageous," Sharita Pogue said. "He's not really had any rest. We decided to move him."
"There were so many people here," Pullen said. "It shows how much he's loved. We had to run people away from here last night.
"Stuff like this happens. You hate it. You just hope and pray everything comes out all right."
Pullen said Pogue was not in school Wednesday. Prior to the shooting, Pogue and Hoover played basketball at an open gym at Sinclair.
According to a police report, Hoover was driving a black 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix with Pogue as his passenger Wednesday night. They placed an order at Kentucky Fried Chicken, 2905 Salem Ave., but drove off without their food, according to KFC employee Robert Bradley.
Pogue and Hoover then sat next door in a Key Bank parking lot for 10 minutes while waiting for Hoover's father, Robert Powell, to bring them some gas because their tank was empty. Pogue was in the passenger seat and Hoover hung his left leg out of the car.
Bradley said he heard about seven shots, and Pogue was struck "in the back on the right side" about one inch from his lower arm pit, the report said. Hoover was struck on the inside of his left foot, "around his arch area."
Hoover ran about 400 or 500 yards to the Good Samaritan Hospital parking lot, where police found him after receiving a 911 call at 9:35 p.m. The emergency calls came from the KFC, where Pogue ran. Police found Pogue at a table inside the restaurant drinking water with a visible bullet wound bleeding onto his shirt.
At least five rounds hit the car, including two to the right front quarter panel, one to the front passenger door window frame, one to the passenger mirror and one to the back right seat, the report said.
Police, performing a sweep of the area around the shooting scene, found shell casings at an apartment complex on Stanhope Avenue, 100 yards north of the bank parking lot, Dayton Lt. John Bardun said Wednesday.
Police believe the shots were fired from that location, he said, noting investigators said they found one slug in an ATM outside the bank building.
There are no suspects, Bardun said.
"They were just sitting in the car because they had run out of gas," said Powell, 47. "These are school kids and they don't do anything. This is crazy."
Sinclair men's basketball coach Jeff Price on Thursday said Hoover, 25, was taking pain medication but is doing fine.
Hoover, a 6-foot-11 center, graduated from Belmont High School in 2000 and played for Sinclair during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.
Price said Hoover has spent the past year taking classes at Sinclair to get his transcript in order so he hopefully can attend and play basketball at California University of Pennsylvania, an NCAA Division II school in California, Pa., Price said.
Pogue, a 6-foot-9 center, plans to play basketball next season at Vincennes University, a junior college in Vincennes, Ind.
