...to the list of players who were willing to give up guaranteed salary. He just signed away nearly $5 million.

Next time this comes up and an army of people claim that no one would ever do it, I'll try to remember this (additional) example.

Not technically, Chicago didnt have to pay Williams anything. Every NBA contract has a stip that basically says any injury that results from riding a motorcycle allows the contract to be voided...

He essentially becomes a rookie again. Seems pretty different to me than just giving up money.

Thats right. Apparently the NBA office repedeatly contacted the Bulls and told them they didn't have to pay Williams a thing. However, by giving him some of the money, it greatens their chance to resign him (if they choose) if he gets healthy.
