Not exactly sure how accurate these numbers are, but numerous NFL sources are reporting that after Adrian's contract, the Cards will only have about $1.5M left in cap space. If Dansby doesn't re-sign, the possibilities of extending Boldin this year may almost be impossible.

Seems accurate....idealy, the club would have rather had dansby re-sign first then get AW re-signed to have max cap space, but he seems hell bent on hitting the free agent market next season. The domino effect is that Boldin will most likely not re-sign this season, unless money can be deferred until next year, and we all know that is not going to happen.

So Wilson's hit against the cap went *UP* about 4 million? Where are we going to find money to pay our draft picks?

Wilson is worth every penny.

And we still got a long way to go before July 15th, AND we got 78 guys that we must reduce to 53 by September.

There may be some more surprise cuts on the way, who knows.

Cuts will be made to accommodate the draft picks. If Dansby doesn't get re-signed, we will be cutting it close.

Yep, we shouldn't forget that we'll have to cut four or five vets just to sign our draft picks. I think, counting our unsigned picks, we're at 84 or 85 players right now.

I just don't understand how we had over $40M in cap space, release Edge, LaBoy, Hood, only re-sign Dansby, Warner, Wilson and McFadden to contracts, lose Antonio & Arrington and still need to cut players in order to sign draft picks. How much would Dansby save us if he re-signed for say $7M a year, like $2M which still will not be enough to re-sign Boldin.

Re-signing Dansby should clear up around $5M or so in cap space, depending on the contract. Not sure about the exact number, but it should be enough to sign the rookies, and presumably Boldin.

Might as well get used to it. We are going to be bumping up against the cap all the time as long as we have a team with as much talent as we have right now. Good players get good salaries. Look at how many top notch players the Pats have lost in the last few years. You can only afford so many class A players.

With all the whining and groaning going on now because we haven't made every single player we have happy, wait until we have to start making decisions about which star player to keep because we can't afford all of them. The dollars coming in off of the new stadium aren't infinite. This business like any other business has to show a profit. If the economy gets as bad as some think it will, a lot of NFL teams are going to be dropping a lot of high priced talent.

Ezzzzackly. I dont have the list right with me, but the Chargers have a horrible list of players who are on contract years right now. Rivers, Sproles McNeil, Merriman and more IIRC. When asked about it, AJ Smith more or less said, "It's a result of good drafting, what do you want?"

Remember that the cap number can be miss leading. Only the top 51 or is it 53 (???) salaries count against the cap. So signing a top draft pick will move that player into the top but another falls below the Mendoza line.

Wilson got a huge deal. Warner got a huge deal. Warner's deal especially is brutal to the cap because it is only 2 years. There is no way to really spread out a profit bonus. Check Joe's cap thread and look at the numbers for Wilson and Warner.

Then realize, we didn't resign Dansby, he's on the franchise tag which is 10+ million by itself. With Warner over 10mil and Wilson about 10 mil, thats over 30 mil of the 40mil.

Laboy cost us cap space to cut if I'm not mistaken as it excellerated his bonus from last year. Hood was a very minor savings if any. Edge was the only one who provided any relief.

Antonio and Arrington were free agents so their cap space was already figured into that 40m number you quoted. (which I'm just trusting you on)
