Or, keep the sports forums free & have a subscription fee if you want to get to "Other Stuff". If people really won't pay, then all those forums can go bye-bye.

Just thinkin' out loud.

I like the idea that if you donate/pay subscription, you get to access ASFN ad free.

I like that idea a lot...

You guys are on to something here. I think the main reason we'll hold off on this is that Jim wont accept donations until the last minute, but there could be some really good ideas here.

If you sign up for a subscription, then you get:

1. No ads
2. Kick ass upgraded user account with the following:
- 1000 PM storage
- Bigger avatars
- A special forum for subscribers only?

I dunno...but I am starting to like this idea...

I don't think that will be a big enough incentive for most people, sadly. I'd still pay, just because I want to support the site, but I'm so used to the ads I don't even notice them anymore.

Another big plus for me. I had the ability to have 500 for over a year, and it was bliss. I lost the option, once I became a mod.

Well, most people that would pay would pay because of what ASFN means to them. Or whatever.

If you put back those crappy Ebay ads, you'll get more people to donate to get rid of them. :D

yep...I think a "membership has its privileges" kind of thing would go over well. I like the "members only" forum...

They're gone now, you can all stop whining...

Sigh.

Someday when Jim isn't able to pay the insane amount of money to run the server here, this site wont be able to support itself and it will go bye-bye because nothing can be done to help pay for it.

It's certainly not coming out of my pocket when I have a family to feed and all I get for my troubles is whining and freaking idiots stalking me.

As long as YOU folks are comfortable is all that matters really...enjoy it while it lasts I guess.

All I want to do is make this site self-sufficient and I don't think it's ever going to happen.

I'd gladly pay a subscription fee...sorry if I was too harsh on that but being in marketing myself I really, really, really hate the imbedded stuff. I don't like "tricky" marketing....at least with advertorials they are stamped "Advertisement" at the top.

It's a pet peeve of mine and I went a bit bombtastic in my reaction. I apologize.

LIKE IT.

I pay $20 a year for access to one website, roughly a nickel a day, because when I thought it over, I go there a couple times a day, met some people I really like a lot, get information, would miss it a lot -- so I just don't tip the barista at Starbucks. I voluntarily pay $50 a year to another forum because I value the quality of the info and would rather keep it ad-free. So yes, I would pay a reasonable monthly or annual fee for access to ASFN. Especially if it keeps the really intrusive adds out (I esp. detest the roll-over popouts.

I have thought about doing the Amazon thing 2 or 3 times lately, but I do not remember how it works, and was too lazy to look it up. Maybe you need to make the means of doing that really plain again -- I buy stuff there all the time, and I'd run most of it through here if I could just click some button here like at the top of the page.

But I'd rather pay a subscription for ad-free website.

And I appreciate all the work you guys do -- I am just sick of advertisements sneaking into literally everything we come in contact with.

I'll make it a bit easier, but the reality is, if you click the link at the top "ASFN Amazon" and go there, and search for anything, it will go back to us.

But I think I'll make the link clearer...maybe use the logo or something...

I buy stuff there all the time, but I found out that none of my purchases go to the site since it's my affiliate account.

But if any of you buy it, all you have to do is go through our site to get there....and buy whatever you want. You just have to enter Amazon with our affiliate id:

The first issue I can see rearing its ugly head would be the argument "I can post whatever I want - I pay to post here you know?"

We'd have to make it clear that payment does not equal ownership. There are still rules to post by, etc.

Just as subscribing to a magazine doesn't give you ownership, etc. You are paying for content.

I'm in the same boat with Shane, didn't know anything about the amazon link and my family spends a lot of money there.

Just to make sure ASFN gets credit could you review exactly what we need to do when buying something from Amazon because your post has me confused.

Of course I'm easily confused these days. I blame all those hours I spent on the East Side at SDS watching Cardinal football.

That link at the top of the page...Shop Amazon...click on it and that's it :)

Once you are there, they know where you came from, so everything you buy gives us like 4-6%.

That's it!

It might not be possible, but I wouldn't mind at all if mods (and others if they want) had a "Shop Amazon" link underneath our avs. That might get more people to see it more often. Just a thought.

I wish there was an easier way to do it...no idea.

I think Krep is on to something here.

Yes, putting a link under avs is a hack and not worth it, but putting a link in a signature is free.

If you had something like "Help support ASFN, before buying from Amazon, please do so from this link" or something like that.

I spend about $500/yr on Amazon and while I try to do it from ASFN sometimes I forget.

Can you make a vbcode signature with an Amazon link? I'm not sure but I think they used to have little button graphics that you can include. I'd put it in my sig.

I tried to use it, but I was using a Borders giftcard for my Amazon purchases, and I couldn't do both.
