Alabama women's basketball cruised in the second half for an opening March Madness win over Green Bay in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide got off to a slow start but find its offensive stride in the second quarter and never looked back in the 81-67 win over the Phoenix in College Park, Maryland. Alabama led by nine at the break, the broke the game open in the third leading by as many as 13.

The Crimson Tide ended a 22 game winning streak by Green Bay, who hadn't lost since early December.

Alabama will face the winner of Maryland and Norfolk State, played later on Saturday. The second round game will be on Monday with a time and TV designation still to be announced.

Zaay Green shines for Alabama​


The Arkansas Pine-Bluff transfer shined in her Alabama tournament debut, and the Crimson Tide needed Green to shine. Green has averaged 15.7 points per game, second on the team but was the third option at times behind 3-point ace Aaliyah Nye.

Green finished with 22 points, only topped by Nye's 23 points. Sarah Ashlee Barker got off to a slow start, but with Green's hot hand, Alabama was able to roll.

Middle eight period swings game in favor of Alabama women's basketball​


The Crimson Tide held Green Bay scoreless from the field for more than the last four minutes of the first quarter. A 6-0 run into the half, the Crimson Tide had their largest lead of the day, leading by nine at the break. Alabama got the lead out to 13 before Green Bay made a late run. Alabama would get the lead by back to double digits by the end of third quarter.

Crimson Tide turning defense into offense​


Alabama forced just eight turnovers but those led to 20 points o the offensive side for the Crimson Tide. It was helpful as the Tide shot just 4 of 14 from 3-point range, a usually reliable place for them. It wasn't that Alabama was using fast breaks after turnovers, they only scored five points in the first half that way but they were able to get solid possessions after the defense forced a turnover.
