Looks like Alan Faneca has been busy since his retirement. I knew that he'd dropped over 100 pounds since retiring, but running a sub 4:00 marathon is impressive.

I've been striving for a sub 4:00 marathon for a couple years now. I thought I had it last year, but blew up with 4 miles to go.

I wonder if Alan get's bragging rights over Hines Ward's 5:12 marathon time in Kona at last years Ironman Championships.

I watched a 360lb QB in the Arena League on TV. He formerly was a star at Kentucky some years ago at QB. He is bigger than any lineman on the team. The dude is hard to bring down. Just hope he does not fall on you.

Reminds me of Ed Cunningham's weight loss.

Did the same thing....well close to, after I stopped playing rugby.

Played at about 290lbs and now weigh about 250lbs.

And it is not like Faneca was out of shape, and neither was I (impossible to be out of shape and play rugby). But, the game dictates that type of power and "padding" requirements.

Once I knew I played my last game, my goal was to reduce the weight of my body. Muscle, fat, whatever. The weight needed to go down.

All I did was very, very light weight lifting and running for the 1st year and a half and got down to 240lbs.

Yet, all the aches, and pains from playing rugby for 15 years started to show up as I lost strength.

Luckily my wife had gotten into yoga, and long story short, I ended up going with her to yoga. After an awkward class or two, I was hooked. I also put back on about 10 lbs of lean muscle.

So, post contact sports, I have gone with a running and yoga exercise routine and it is working out very well for me. Yet, it is not for everyone. I put on muscle REALLY easily, so yoga is all I need for my strength, and running takes care of the rest (and yes, while my shoulders are beat up, my knees are in pretty darn good shape for the running).

.................LOL, so that long winded nonsense is a just another way to say, I am happy for Alan Faneca and understand his goal.

He is in great shape no doubt! he has to be around 40 but his body looks like it in its late 50's early 60's. Is it just me? Has to be from all the pounding he took.

Just loose skin from being so big for so long and now being very thin.

Ha! While a sub 4:00 time is nice, I think Hines maintains bragging rights since he swam 2.4 miles and biked 112 before running the marathon. :D
