These days, Dream Theater is almost synonymous with the term "progressive metal." For a very good reason too, as they have helped to define the genre more so probably than any other band (perhaps with the exception of Queensryche.) Images & Words is the album that stared it all. Dream Theater's second release, and first with vocalist James LaBrie, I&W actually sold very well in the U.S. mostly due to the success of the hit single "Pull Me Under." However that may just be the weakest song on this cd. With songs like "Take the Time", "Under a Glass Moon", "Learning to Live", and the spectacular "Metropolis", Images & Words has solidified itself as one of the quintessential records in progressive metal, an album imitated by many, but equaled by none. Personally, this is only my third favorite DT album, behind Awake (1994) and Scenes From a Memory (1999), although Images & Words is still probably the most widely known Dream Theater cd.
