Still hoping we add a DT.
In Diana Russini's Trade Deadline "Scoop City" article this morning, she noted that the 49ers "have called around looking to add to their defense; New England defensive tackle Davon Godchaux is available, and the Niners know it."

He might be too old to interest Ossenfort (about to turn 30), but he's under contract for two more years and would cost about $1.4M this year, $5M in 2025, and $7.5M in 2026. Would it be worth it for the Cards to out-bid the 49ers?

EDIT: Looks as though the 49ers got DL Khalil Davis from the Texans for a 2026 7th... and the trade deadline has passed.

More from Diana Russini: "Several teams showed a strong interest in Giants LB Azeez Ojulari. Joe Schoen’s asking price was high given New York’s banged up front. Ultimately, teams chose not [to] pay it."

given the 4 win 2022 and the 4 win 2023:

i would have expected a tad more urgency in adding talent to a team that has shown playoff promise, but might be hamstrung by a leaky D

I hope Baron Browning becomes the edge equivalent of Halje Froholdt

I understand your need for urgency, but urgency to sneak into the playoffs was never the game plan. People need to understand that MOJG were hired to create sustainable success. And that specifically was described as a heavy emphasis on draft and development. They tore it down to the studs in 2023, then began the rebuild. They’re on a solid path upwards, but by no means are they close to a finished product. They need to stand relatively pat, stay the course, and continue to draft and develop. If they make the playoffs this year…..great. But, no big deal if they don’t. This franchise has made the playoffs before, albeit not as frequently as we would like. But, the one thing I’ve never seen in 60+ years is a franchise that’s built to go deep into the playoffs for a longer stretch of time. That’s the game plan & I hope they stay the course.

Sustainable is the key imo. The old regime under Keim would mortgage the future by trading draft capital for one year rentals. It made some sense because they were lousy at drafting nfl talent and developing it.

The new regime seems to be able to identify talent and coach them.

Froholdt can give him some quarterback sacking tips.

i dont think one 5th round pick is the diff between mortgaging the future and building a sustainable team
They gave up a 6th for a 25 year old with a decent amount of upgrade over what we currently have. Who did you want for a 5th because they were never going to make 2 trades? Browning has played both inside and outside, and the Cardinals LOVE versatility. And if he shows something, the Cardinals can sign him to a very affordable contract after the season.
And lastly, he’s an OSU kid & JG will get way more out of him than moron VJ did.

seriously.

not crazy that we went bargain bin shopping again at a key position, KNOWING that this team IS actually in position to make the playoffs and gain valuable experience there. But, hopefully this is another somewhat diamond in the rough Monty picks up off the scrap heap... or at least a cubiczerconia.

That's BJs brother right? That has to help some to have your brother playing on the same team.
Yes, BJ’s brother.

Yes, nice to have both together long term.

But if you lose him to FA next year, the brothers won’t get playing time together.

Maybe you wait till he hits FA then sign him long term? I know it doesn’t help our pass rush now but you avoid giving up draft capital for a rental player.

I wholeheartedly agree. I'll be (likely rightfully) ridiculed for this, but dare I say we are building a dynasty?
Maybe I've had too much second hand smoke from whomever does the bong rips :)

I don't know. I think we have several on here that do that.
