I don't want "Album-A-Day" to be forgotten immediately, and I might have selected an album that won't generate any response whatsoever....

Anyways, "What's Going On" was Marvin Gaye's "Magnum Opus"..an album that still carries the meaning now then it did when it was initially released 33 years ago.....

At the time, Marvin was in crossroads of his career, even to the extent that he considered trying-out for the Detroit Lions.... He wanted to compose a concept album that reflected on the strife that Americans were dealing around the time of the late 60s to early 70s and still plagues many today.... Marvin Gaye conveyed all the emotions so perfectly....About the protest of war, drug abuse, poverty, racism...etc...Not only did he address all those political/social concerns, but through his lyrics he gave everyone who listened a new sense of optimism and renewed hope....Not only were the lyrics stand-out throughout the album, but instrumentally the players were excellent at their craft....Gaye incorporated an array of styles on this album...From the jazzy/reggae style of "Right On" to the soulfulness of "Mercy Mercy Me".... It's shocking that Barry Gordy nearly didnt release this album since it wasn't too commercial whatsoever, but probably became one of the most highly regarded Motown albums of all-time....

The stand outs to me are "Right On", "What's Going On", "Inner City Blues", and "Mercy Mercy Me"..."Wholy Holy" is probably one of the most spiritual songs ever recorded, just pulls on every possible emotion... But in fact, there are no weaknesses to this album...Each song builds off of each brilliantly....

One tidbit about the song "What's Going On" Detroit Lion HOF Lem Barney and former TE Mel Farr sung back-up on the chorus.....

You don't have to be a major fan of Motown or a fan of Marvin Gaye for that matter to appreciate this album.... It will forever stand the test of time as a masterpiece....

I still cannot get over how riveting this entire album was..... It was a political/social concept album that is always relevant to any generation (including today's).......

I know Gaye after "Whats Going On" started to shift all of his attention toward ballads/soul/funk towards the end of his life, but to me he was at his best throughout this album.... Just the texture of sound on each and every song and how they all build off on each other.....

Marvin Gaye still had so much to offer the world when his father senselessly/idiotically murdered him the day after his 45th birthday..... I just wonder what direction he would have taken after releasing "Sexual Healing"... He was continuing what he did with the likes of "Let's Get It On", but I just have this strong conviction that he would have been performing so many songs about issues that apply to today's youth, but his legacy and the message of this album still enables him to get in touch w/everyone regardless of background (in any manner).....
