Alcorn Central’s Sydnee Norman and Tupelo’s Andrew Brown have been voted Daily Journal Athletes of the Week.
Norman, a pitcher on the softball team, allowed two earned runs on 14 hits with 29 strikeouts and four walks over her last 18 1/3 innings pitched. She won the Female Athlete of the Week Twitter poll with 42.3% of the vote. The other nominees were Kossuth’s Victoria Fields and Nettleton’s Bailey Payne.
Brown, a sophomore on the track and field team, broke his own indoor state record in the mile while competing at the New Balance National in Boston. He clocked a time of 4:15.60 to eclipse his previous mark by four seconds. Brown earned 49% of the vote in the Male Athlete of the Week poll, beating out Saltillo’s Jordan Evers and Thrasher’s Ryan Tate.
