According to Gil Brandt, the Alex Smith workout was attended by all 32 teams, including Rod Graves, and he received a standing ovation at the end. Brandt said he threw one uncatchable ball during the entire workout. The 49er's took him out for dinner the night before so he's in the running now to be the number one pick.

Rodgers works out tomorrow and it's expected everyone who saw Smith will go and see Rodgers now too.

I was driving back from my bank and they said on sports radio that Smith looked really good but that he still clearly doesn't have as strong an arm as Rodgers and it really depends whether the 49ers value arm strength or height.

Apparently the big concern on Smith was footwork since they played so much shotgun but he showed good enough feet that scouts were convinced it wouldn't be a problem.

Brandt didn't say anything about his arm strength other than he was able to hit the long balls. Sounds like he's pushed himself back into the top 5 at least.

I didn't get any of that as well. Based on the write up on NFL.com.

Smith is good, but....

I find it amazing that a workout in shorts, in a controlled environment, would have any effect on a player's draft status. Remember Tim Couch? He was picked number 1 because of his phenomenial workouts. What a load of crap. Same thing for Mike Williams. All you ever needed to see was his games. A beast. Now because he looks supple in his routes he is back to a top 5 pick. Ridiculous.

yeah but smith did a fairly good job of leading his team on an incredible ride this year too. it's not like he did nada in the games. this is just more confirmation.

Sorry you gotta know I live in the Bay area so it's big news here because the 49ers are likely going to take him or Rodgers. Rodgers is more local so the guy talking said what he was told was Smith impressed everyone there but the thinking is still that Rodgers has the better arm, Smith the better size and mobility so it's really a question of which the 49ers want.

Walsh would probably pick Smith all things being equal since he loved mobile QBs, Rodgers can move but not like Smith.

A standing O. Wow. It will be hard for Rodgers to top that.

That is good news. Both qbs (Rodgers & Smith) could be taken before the Cards pick. Means another good player could be there for the Cards. It could go like this:

1. 49ers Rodgers or Smith qbs
2. Dolphins Ronnie Brown rb
3. Browns Smith or Rodgers qbs
4. Bears M. Williams wr
5. Bucs Cadilac Williams rb
6. Titans B. Edwards wr
7. Vikings D. Johnson lb
8. Cardinals Benson or Rolle

That would be very interesting!!

They interviewed the kid on Sirius NFL Radio. Man, was I impressed by just listening to this guy. He said that Rod Graves was in attendence, but Denny was not. He said it was surreal to have everyone give him an ovation. Said that meeting Gil Brandt was an honor and compared meeting him to meeting Lombardi. I'm sure he helped raise the stock of his receivers and running back as well.

1!!

I was thinking the same thing, if both QB's work out well and go early it guarantees us a good player also.

They just had Smith on radio locally (on tape) and he certainly says all the right things. Before today it was pretty universal that people around here wanted Rodgers, now at least they're discussing Smith as a viable choice.
