I fully expect this to happen, we'll sign Clausen as a backup and then JP Losman and I'll have to be committed.

Bad sign if San Fran is willing to trade him within the division. We saw how well that went with McNabb in Washington, and I'd fully expect the same if Alex came to AZ.

In addition, He's a terrible fit in Arian's downfield system, which is the primary reason I think these rumors are garbage. Whatever draft pick we could possibly offer is more valuable than him.

The rash of rumors could quite possibly be part of a bigger overall Cardinal trading strategy.

The message they are delivering is "Don't get too cute with your offer; we've got plenty of options": We're impressed by Barkley; we're exploring an Alex Smith trade; we're not afraid to start a rookie QB drafted high. (I wouldn't be shocked to hear that Arians has fallen in love with Geno or that wee've been involved in trade talks for Matty Flynn. Or that Keim "isn't ruling out the possibility of trading down).

There figures to be a finite number of drafting or trading scenarios involving a QB. What we don't want to find ourselves is on the wrong side of the supply & demand equation. One way to be on the right side is to expand the supply side by putting as many balls in the air as possible.

Thus the rash of rumors.

If Alex Smith threw downfield, Cards would be trading for Kapernick allegedly.

It will never happen just like me & Shane said when the Peyton to Cards rumors started flying. :D

Plus, I really don't see Harbaugh being an idiot to possibly getting grilled if the trade backfired...not happening!

Realistically, if KC wants Smith they'll probably get him since they have higher picks in every single round and SF would rather trade him out of the division IMO. It doesn't make much sense for the Cardinals to drive the Niners trade compensation higher so this 'rumor' must be coming from SF right?

Not necessarily. Think bigger picture. For example, let's say Keim wants to deal with NE for Mallett or with the Jets for Sanchez or (though unlikely) Seattle for Flynn. Or he's trying to strike a favorable deal with a FA QB. Or on draft day, wants to trade down a few notches to take Barkley for more realistic value. The less desperate he appears, the better bargain he should be able to drive.

Thus - if he has even the remotest possibility of, say, A Smith in his hip pocket - the stronger negotiating position he should be in.

I agree (mostly) with your analysis Jeff, but the most important thing we can take away from this, without doubt: is that Arians et al watched tape on Kevin and have decided he isn't the guy. I thought for sure Kevin would be here in 2013, now I'm not so sure.

Maybe the Niners want to trade him to us to torpedo our season with yet another crappy QB who will cost us draft picks and cap space?

I would be upset if Keim and Arians did not express some interest in any available QB. Now, what we are willing to give up for him might not be what SF wants, but I still expect them to show interest.

Hopefully we aren't offering them Patrick Peterson and a 2nd round pick. :bang:

If I've read this post once, I've read it a hundred times on this board (numerous posters, not just one). So, tell me, are you saying that Peterson is the equivalent of Rogers-Cromartie? Cause DRC isn't even close, and really did almost nothing for Philadelphia. And now he is a free agent. It was easy to throw in DRC because he didn't fit our system, and he was overrated.

Agree, stupid comparison. DRC is a speedster with zero work ethic or physicality.

I for one would LOVE to get Smith. He is the best available guy who has turned his career around. He would be light years ahead of anything we could get this year.

Although I think DRC is better than people give him credit (but doesn't fit the system), I think the joke of trading our #1 CB + 2nd round pick is played out.

This sounds like nothing more than SF using the rumour mill to drive up the price for Snith. I'll wager that he ends up in KC at end of day.

Alex Smith is 10000 times better than any QB on our roster...it funny how many ate trashing him whrwhen his qb rating is higher than all our ABs combined. If He were our QB last season, cards win ten games.
