Alex Smith is 10000 times better than any QB on our roster...it funny how many ate trashing him whrwhen his qb rating is higher than all our ABs combined. If He were our QB last season, cards win ten games.
I agree. I'm not saying Smith is the best thing out there but he was playing at a high level when he got dinged up. 104 rating, 70% completion, 8 ypa, almost 3-1 TD/INT ratio...not exactly JP Losman(or Skelton or Lindley or Kolb).

He is no better than any of our QB's without SF's OL, running game, and Jim Harbaugh. Trading a pick for this guy is borderline insane.

There is a ton of hyperbole in this post. We're trashing him because he's very highly overrated. Plus, he's coveted so much in San Francisco, that he was benched in favor of a green QB with no experience and is potentially being traded within the division. In other words, SF is telling Alex, "not only do we know you can't beat us twice a season, but we also believe you'll guarantee AZ won't take our division crown anytime soon."

If you honestly believe Alex Smith, a mediocre QB who needs a ton of good coaching and disposable talent to be productive, would have made this team five wins better, I have some awesome beachfront property in Avondale I'd like to sell you.

If the Cards want to offer next years 4th and 6th for him.. sure, bring him in, let him and Kolb battle for the job, and if he doesn't work he is only on a two year deal and the QB crop for next year looks to be pretty deep...

If they trade anything more than a 4th for him they need to re evaluate everything...

In the last four years (47 of 64 games...though at least 5 of those games were coaches decisions) Alex Smith passed for 62 td's and 32 int's in an offense that wasn't pass happy. Where their best receiver was a young and not very effective Crabtree (until this past year) and TE Vernon Davis.

In the past TWO years, 26 games combined, he has 30 Td's and 10 INT's. He had 70 percent completion percentage last year.

OUR team the last three years has had the likes of Moxie, Skeletor, Koncussion Kolb, SCUD, Lindley, and Hoyer.

They combined to throw 41 TD's and 61 INT's combined. How did we go 18-30 with those numbers?

If you take Koncussion Kolb out of the mix the numbers are even worse 23 td's and 44 INT's. That's in 33 games. Ouch. 0.6 TD's and 1.3 INT's a game AVERAGE over a 33 game span (more than 2 years).

Believe me, I want a franchise QB. But what we've been is epic suck.

Smith isn't one. But he's not shabby either. He's as close as there is out there and whatever he is, is alot more than what we've had. He's no Drew Brees, but for a guy who in the last two years had a 3:1 TD/INT ratio take over a team that has 2:3 TD/INT ratio over the last three years is a BIG swing.

Given who we know is out there I'm for signing Stanton and Moore and drafting someone.

But our QB's have sucked the last few years.

If we get him, our team is a whole lot better than it was. Maybe it isn't the guy we want, or ultimately need, but we really don't have a ton of top flight choices out there.

Does someone really want to wait for Fitzpatrick or Cassel to get released? Would THEY be better than Smith?

Again I'll take a flyer on a hungry Stanton and Moore. But they haven't done what Smith has done. None has taken their team to a NFC championship game, let alone ~14 months ago.

We could do a whole lot worse than Alex Smith. A good shot we DO end up with something worse. I have hope for Arians and Keim, but I've been conditioned to believe otherwise from Graves.

Smith took a team that had a great defense and played within himself and took his team to a championship game....and somehow we don't think with OUR defense and Arians background that somehow something decent might not happen?

We need to get multiple QB's. Even if we get Smith we need to draft a guy and find a veteran backup. Hopefully Arians/Keim find a diamond in the rough, but in the end a serviceable QB gives us playoff aspirations.

Well let's see.

Reid to Arizona was "all but done" and he ended up in KC.

Smith to KC is "all but done" so...?

The worst part about all of this is that we're driving up Smith's price which means our division rival is going to end up getting more for him and it's all for nothing because they aren't going to send him to us unless we offer way more than any one else.

I hope we are not even seriously in the mix... Everything that would occur in that scenario is bad, Best case scenario (which is horrible) We get in the bidding war with KC, lose..and end up giving SF more/better draft picks.

I'd offer them Stewart Bradley and Adam Snyder for Smith.

Ian Rapaport reported that although the Cardinals have "expressed interest" they don't think the Niners would trade him within the division and think they are trying to drive up his value. He also said the Chiefs have expressed the most interest while the Browns and Cardinals are also in the mix.

My conclusion: It doesn't hurt the Niners to try and stir the pot until March 12th. They might get a third rounder for him, but more likely a fourth.

I think they could get a little more than that. Remember, we gave up DRC and a 2nd round pick for Kevin Kolb...

High demand low supply, I could see at least a 2nd round.

LaCanfora tweet just now:

@JasonLaCanfora: The Alex Smith trade is not with Arizona, to be clear again. The Cards offer was weak. 49ers told people its not AZ. KC remains likely team

It continues to intrigue me how such a historically QB starved team can have fans who don't like ANYONE to potentially fill the position.

I did miss out on all the Peyton speculation threads, was there a generally positive vibe about that potential move or was there much poo-poo'ing of that idea too?

49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith.

Not a surprise. This takes the Chiefs out of the quarterback market in rounds one and two IMO.

Chiefs will trade second-round pick this year - the top pick in second round - as well as another conditional mid-round pick in 2014.

Great deal for SF. Also, we can now forget LJ as our new OT, unless KC decides to keep their present LT (Albert??), which I doubt they will.

I'm still hopeful that all of this blows up in the 49ers faces. CK, as most running QB's, probably will be hurt at some point and now the 49ers will have ??? as a backup.

Any way you slice it, the Chiefs paid a substantial price for Alex Smith. When a good quarterback evaluator like Andy Reid pays up like that for an above average, but far from elite, quarterback, you realize just how lousy this quarterback draft class is.

With one less team in the market, it does mean the Cardinals are more likely to have one more of the least ugly quarterbacks available in the second round IMO.
