He has been a knucklehead throughout his career, and you have to be careful who you bring into your team. That being said, when you end the draft and fa with large roster holes, you have to take some chances sometimes.

I have no doubt KS and BA will be watching him closely at OTAs. If he's still a knuklehead he won't make it to training camp and I feel pretty sure he will have a short leash in camp should he make it there. If he gets it together then the team may have found a small gem at a very cheap price.

Nice call on this one. :)

Nice call on this one.

Thank you. Even a blind squirrel gets a nut sometimes.

He has one year left, and one year deals are great for this. He can keep his nose clean for a year trying to get the bigger FA deal. I don't think we have too many of these guys, a team can handle one or two.

He was pretty good a couple years ago for the Pats. Looked like a real steal getting a starting CB in the 7th round. Last year he never seemed to get on track after missing time due to legal issues and the injuries. With the semi dumpster fire that is the Pats current CB situation, it was thought that he would be possibly be one of the starters. He must have really got on someone's bad side in NE for them to just release him. That being said, if his head is right and he is healthy, he is a pretty decent CB. Not real big, but plays physical and also plays with an attitude.

A bunch of articles on this signing referenced his "legal troubles" but didn't spell out what they were. A quick check of Wikipedia revealed a couple of interesting facts, and some scary ones:

Alfonzo "Fonzie" Dennard

Legal troubles
Dennard was convicted of felony assault on a police officer in Lincoln, Nebraska, on February 20, 2013. On April 11, 2013, Dennard was sentenced to 30 days in jail beginning on March 1, 2014, and two years of probation. Three months into his probation Dennard was arrested on suspicion of a DUI on the morning of July 11, 2013. He admitted to this parole violation at a later court hearing and was scheduled for a sentencing hearing on December 5, 2013. At the hearing he was sentenced to an additional 30 days in jail, was required to complete an additional 100 hours of community service, had his probation extended an additional year, and was given a "no alcohol" condition. On March 1, 2014, Dennard reported to the Lancaster County Adult Detention Facility in Nebraska to begin serving his 60-day jail term. He served the minimum 35 days and was released after given credit for good behavior and time already served.

Personal
Dennard's last name is pronounced as DENN-erd. His second cousin, Darqueze Dennard, is also a cornerback in the NFL, although Darqueze pronounces his last name de-NARD, due to a family dispute.

I would bring him in but since ARZ was awarded a claim they go to the bottom of order, no? Curious to see NE cutting 2 CB's after losing Revis. Did they even draft a CB in this year's draft?

We already have four good safeties though

good is bucannon probably, but didnt play at his role yet
mathieu is a great nickel corner but he is 5'8''
rashard johnson is an intelligent player but slow and not good in coverage
jefferson is a good blitzer and solid tackler but not fast enough to play safety at decent level

Swearinger wouldn't be much of an upgrade over any of them IMO, who would you cut to give swearinger a shot? Id rather have these 4.

while they claimed him off waivers: this is essentially a one year prove it kind of situation

Dennard is on the last year of a low rookie deal : he has a great incentive to play well this year
