Who is the best point guard never to win an NBA championship? I'll do the other positions as I get around to them.

man, I want to say Nash, but it's gotta be Stockton. NBA leader in assists, two finales, 4 WCFs, very good defender.

nba leader in total assists must mean he is the best right?

27) Patrick Ewing
28) John Havlicek
29) Isiah Thomas
30) Rick Barry

Stockton was never a MVP candidate even at his peak.

Yah there was some guy wearing 23 at the time that was gobbling up all the MVPs.

It's got to be Stockton as much as I love Nash. I think Nash is the 3rd best PG of all time, but Magic and Stockton are 1 and 2, respectively, ahead of him.

A) so, some list that some random person came up with is proof of...what exactly? And not only that, but in the above there, out of PGs who have never won a title, Stockton is te first guy mentioned after Nash.

Not to mention the idea of Thomas under Nash is ridiculous to me. So I take that list with a grain of salt.

B) You do realize I said MUCH MORE about Stockton then just being the league leader in assists, right? You know...like defense, leadership, getting to 2 Finals, 4 WCFs. But that's okay...you probably never watched Stockton either and for some reason believe he's a C.

I voted for Nash because I'm a homer. But it should be Stockton.

Ha ha. I didn't vote at all for that very reason.

You can vote for Steve Nash with pride if for no other reason he did not have Karl Malone to pass the ball too. That made life much easier for Stockton.

Having the receiver doesn't guarantee that the Point Guard has the skills to maximize the combination. He still has to deliver.

Being objective, should we ever hold it against a player that he was not alone in a team sport in being consistently good?

No, but a supporting cast helps a lot. It needs to be considered. By the way, I grew up watching Stockton play and admired him greatly.

KJ because he routinely lit up Stockton head-to-head.

In a van...down by the river.
Stockton.
If Nash was even an average defender i might have voted for him.
Stockton took care of business on both ends.

5× NBA All-Defensive Second Team
2× NBA steals leader
9× NBA assists leader
Not as good a pure shooter as Nash, but still pretty damn good.

Stockton also may have set the best picks out of any guard in the history of the league. Not the first thing one would think about when thinking about point guards, but Stockton's screens were amazing. Just like his passing, his picks were always perfectly timed and perfectly executed.

I have long winded debates with so many Jazz fans now... IMO, The best defensive PG in the history of the game was Stockton, the best offensive PG in the history of the game was Nash, and the best all-round PG in the game was Magic. considering that Magic doesn't qualify for the poll, and I would have to say that Stockton had more consistency at the top than did Nash - but it is oh so close... they don't just give out MVPs.

KJ was great, but Mark Jackson would be ahead of him in this poll.

That has to be a joke. What did Mark Jackson ever do, besides figure out a way to hang around forever? There's no way you'd pick Jackson over Johnson if you were try to assemble a great team.

I don't know. I'd still put Isiah just ahead of Nash as far as best offensive PG in the history of the game. Nash was the better pure shooter, but Thomas could get to the rack at will against anyone, at any time, while still putting up 9.3 dimes per game. But it's debatable. The difference in their D though is what elevates him above Nash for me.

I voted for Stockton....only because every team on the planet knew what Stockton and Malone were going to do every single game and couldn't do anything about it. It was unreal watching the two of them force their will on that pick and roll. It's hard to believe that they at least didn't get one title.

My second one would probably be Kevin Johnson. I think those two players played on both sides and that's why I can't say Nash. I thought Nash's defense was huge hindrance.
