I call "setup" on the entire contest. There was no way Blake wasn't going to win, no matter how good McGee's dunks were.
You're absolutely right. We saw that from when they promoted him right from the start.

I am not sure what was worse though Blake Griffins dunks or Kenny Smith with the mic..
I could almost take the Chuckster's pontificating for the TV audience.

But Kenny "The Jet That Whined" with a live microphone for the entire crowd, repeating everything he said four times, was just too much.

I don't think anyone else could have done the mcgee dunks. I would love to see a dunking game of "horse". Make them all do each others dunks.

The fact that they had "coaches" was ridiculous as well. What exactly did Kevin Durant do for Ibaka? Zilch. And Kenny Smith? What a joke. At least Darrell Dawkins could actually dunk. Chris Webber's best experience with the Slam Dunk Contest is sitting on the sidelines watching. His ghetto call out to Dwight Howard was ridiculous, as was all the other staging by Cheryl Miller. Forced and unnecessary. At least the little kid looked like he was having some genuine fun.

And let's not get down too much on Sir Charles. He said what we all thought about Blake's car dunk, but nobody listened to him. As usual. Too bad only 2% of the stuff that comes out of his mouth is actually worth hearing.

Had Griffin converted on his first attempts in the first round he would have had the 2 best dunks of the night, but he didn't and had to switch to something every other guy in the contest could have done easily. Total sham, funny the finals were so much weaker than the first round.

So, uh, WTF was with Dawkins's get-up? All I could think was that he's used up his NBA income and has had to turn to pimping. And then his "balls" comment had all of the analyst guys giggling nervously for about 20 seconds.

The winner of the slam dunk contest should be the addition of all three scores. If not at least let the player's panel judge the final dunk.

This Lenny Kravitz pregame concert is 100x better than any superbowl halftime show in recent memory.

Here is some of the 1990 dunk contest:

Of note:

  • Kenny Smith is in and can indeed dunk.
  • Kenny Sky Walker does the McGee head dunk but not as well.
  • Pippen dunks from Ibaka distance. It seems a little weird that the announcers did not mention this one because it was further than Jordan and Dr J. Brent Barry's may have been as well.

Kenny Smith can dunk. So? What does Kenny Smith know that he could be a "coach" for Blake Griffin? Nothing. He was there as part of the setup.
