Alomar breaks bone in his right hand

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Roberto Alomar broke a bone in his right hand Tuesday night and was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time since 1998.

The Diamondbacks expect him to be sidelined for a while. Manager Bob Brenly said his guess was six to eight weeks, minimum.

Alomar was fearing the worst.

``At my age, you don't want to be on the DL for so long,'' the 36-year-old said. ``In the game of baseball, you never know when it will be over. But you never get prepared for this. I can cheer, that's all I can do right now.''

Alomar, signed as a free agent in the offseason, was hit by a pitch from Milwaukee's Ben Sheets in the sixth inning of the Diamondbacks' 4-2 loss.

He said he was in so much pain that he knew immediately a bone was broken. X-rays revealed a fracture of the bone connecting the pinky and the wrist. Alomar was placed in a splint and will be re-evaluated after the swelling subsides, expected to be several days.

He was replaced by pinch-runner Matt Kata, who remained in the game at second base. Brenly said Kata would start in Alomar's absence.

Infielder Chad Tracy was recalled from Triple-A Tucson and will join the team Wednesday in Milwaukee.

Alomar was placed on the 15-day DL for the first time since July 19-Aug. 4, 1998, when he sprained his right little finger while sliding into second base on July 18 at Anaheim when he was with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 12-time All-Star was batting .222 when he got hurt.

Hey i'm new to the board my name is Matt and man am I glad to see Alamar off the roster to bad it had to be cause of an injury, but I am anxious to see what Tracey can bring to this lineup. I've been a true dbacks fan since they came to Arizona but right now their offense is so boring to watch so hopefully Tracey can bring some power to the lineup to help out Gonzo and Sexson. I just hope Webb and Johnson can shutdown the Brewers how bad would it be if we got swept by the brewers sigh hopefully that doesnt happen. GO DBACKS BEAT THEM BREWERS. Oh yeah one quick question will Tracey be in the lineup tommrow?

Sad to see Alomar go down, he seemed to be starting to hit the ball.

I'm not sure where Tracy fits in here. He's not gonna play 2b, and unless they bench Hillenbrand then I don't see Tracy getting much playing time.

I badly hope that does happen

Heaven forbid they should call up Terrero to help out in the OF

Nothing against Tracy but like greenmachine says, I just don't see Chad getting very much PT unless another injury occurs.

It did seem to me that Alomar was starting to find his swing.

Are you kidding me. Chad needs to play his natural position, 3rd Base. Get rid of the stiff playing there now...

Have you seen Tererro play? The guy is going to be a very good player. He has power and speed. The way Finley is playing I would not mind seeing play. As for now I would give Tracy a shot in right, Bautista in center and Gonzo in left.

Gonzo is a liability. His throwing is a major problem. Singles become doubles...

I could see the Diamondbacks trading Shea as early as July for a pitcher but if they trade him I think it will be during the offseason. Next year's lineup will could look something like this if Shea is traded.

LF-Gonzo
CF-Tererro
RF-Conor Jackson
3rd-Tracy
ss-Cintron
2nd-Hairston/Kata
1b-Sexson(need to sign him)
c-Hammock

They should have called up Terrero instead of Tracy IMO (my eyeroll may have been misused or misunderstood)...if for no other reason than to have real OF depth on the bench. Right now our OF depth consists of a speedster with no bat (Sadler) and our starting catcher.

Fine OF planning by Joe Jr.

I am not a big fan of playing guys out of their "normal" positions...especially trying to make an IF into an OF or vice versa. BB will not bench Finley for any meaningful time because he knows Finley starts slow all the time and then busts out. If the plan was to have Tracy playing OF up here, then I certainly hope he was playing nothing but OF down in Tucson...and my understanding is he was still being used in the IF???

Also, and maybe this is stupid of me to say, but Bautista seems to have found a real comfort zone at the plate and in RF. Why even tempt the fates by moving him over to CF? Leave well enough alone in RF. If they planned on benching Finley, then the only call up that would have made sense is Terrero (actually no matter what they want to do, the only call up that made sense to me was Terrero anyways).

I hope Finley comes out of this funk but we all have to remember he is 39 years old. He had a horrible spring and it has continued into April. Maybe sitting him down a few games will help. Who knows.

As for Tracy, I think maybe Brenly will not only use him in right but also third. As with Finley, maybe Shea needs to sit a few games.

I really agree (superstitiously) about not moving Danny - not position, not in the lineup - NO adjustments!

I also think calling up Terrero made more roster sense just now unless they are planning on playing Tracy both at third (which is perfectly AOK w/me!) and in the outfield. But - when has good sense been part of roster decisions for this team this year?
Tracy was told to play OF in Tucson (mainly RF) one out of three games, I think - so 3 or 4 starts in OF so far. Wonder if Mayne can play OF. LOL. We need three catchers like a hole in the head. Have you guys seen our pitching stats? We're pretty much the worst in MLB across the board. Great work from GMJoeBlows :barf:

If Nincompoop touches any of the kids in Lancaster for a panicky trade, I will rip up my season tix on the BOB plaza.
Maybe we could package Shea, Shane, Alomar, Elmer, Sparks, Estalella, Chuck Kniffin, and the General Manager for a lefty specialist. Oh, wait, we have those. Wonder what Mike Morgan is doing? :p
