Alphas (SyFy)

http://www.syfy.com/alphasseries/

Alphas is an action-packed thriller from writers Zak Penn (The Avengers, X-Men: The Last Stand) and Michael Karnow. In the series, five ordinary people are brought together to form one extraordinary team of Alphas -- people with the unique power to stretch the capabilities of the human mind giving them superhuman physical and mental abilities.

Operating within the Defense Criminal Investigation Service of the U.S. Department of Defense and led by preeminent neurologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lee Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn), an expert in Alpha phenomena, the team investigates cases that point to others with Alpha abilities. As they work against the clock to solve this new brand of crime, they must prevent their own personality differences and disparate backgrounds from interfering with their ultimate mission to catch the enemy.

In addition to Academy Award nominee David Strathairn (Temple Grandin, Good Night, and Good Luck), the ensemble cast stars Malik Yoba (New York Undercover, Why Did I Get Married?), Warren Christie (October Road), Laura Mennell (Watchmen), Ryan Cartwright (Mad Men, Bones) and Azita Ghanizada (Castle).

I haven't seen it yet, but it's waiting for me in my DVR. If it's any good, I think SyFy has one helluva Monday night line up with Warehouse13, Eureka and Alphas.

Between all the shows I have stacked up on my DVR plus the several shows I'm watching through Netflix streaming, I have quite a backlog. I watched 16 minutes of the Alphas pilot and decided to dump the show. I'm not saying it's horrible but I wasn't won over by any of the characters and it just didn't look promising enough to try and fit into my viewing schedule. I was looking forward to this so I'm disappointed and a bit surprised since I've never given up on a sci-fi show this quickly.

I watched it last night. I wasn't great, but it did get better (I agree the first act was a little painful). I'll give it a couple of more episodes to find its legs, but if it doesn't get better I'll be dumping it, too.

I was probably looking for a reason to give up. It didn't help that I found out Zak Penn was behind this project (writer, exec producer). As a rule, the more influence he has on a project the less likely I am to enjoy it. Personally, I think Elektra is about the best the guy can do.

I could be ready to give up on this thing after just two episodes. It's not terrible, its just that they haven't grabbed me with anything yet. The first season of Heroes was so great because you felt as if there was this larger story arc that things were building to. This doesn't have that. Maybe they're building to it, but it's falling flat for me right now.

Lose the Autistic guy and save the show. Heroes really devolved after a nice start but I never saw a 15 minute stretch in it that I found as uninspired as I did the first 15 minutes of this show. Surprisingly though, the numbers seem to still be pretty good for SyFy Network.

Hopefully it will be the flip side of Heroes; it will start with absolute suckitude, and quickly get better ;)

Heroes, after a very short time, became incredibly unwatchable.

Hope so, but it needs to turn around next episode, or I think I might be totally out.

I thought the entire first season of Heroes was pretty great, though. Even some of the second.

Well, the second episode was better than the first, but it was still not great. Yeah, it really needs to pick up the pace, and fast.

okay, the last ep was the best, yet. still not great...but it's earned at least another week from me.

I feel like the Dread Pirate Roberts: "Good night, Wesley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning."

Not from me: As I told you, it would be absolutely, totally, and in all other ways inconceivable.

Are you still watching?

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

You seem a decent fellow, I hate to kill you.

I've tried watching it a couple of times but it's still not doing anything for me. I'm two episodes behind but I doubt I'll watch them. I'm holding on to the slim hope the show will do a 180 and be worth a Netflix visit eventually. I keep swearing I'm not going to waste any more time on this show but a part of me wants SyFy to succeed so I keep giving them every break. I like Eureka and Haven and to a lesser degree Sanctuary and Warehouse 13 but I think they should take some lessons from USA network.

I'll let you know if it's worth revisiting. So far, I'm afraid, the answer is no.

I LOVE Warehouse 13 (and I didn't used to until season 2). I used to LOVE Eureka, but the last couple of seasons just have me in lowercase love with it.
