Stoudemire, Cabarkapa Activated for Friday Night’s Kings Game

Posted: Jan. 9, 2004
The Phoenix Suns today activated forwards Amaré Stoudemire and rookie Zarko Cabarkapa, who had missed a combined 40 games this season. Both will be in uniform beginning with tonight’s game against the Kings at 8:30 p.m. at America West Arena.

Stoudemire, who missed 18 games after suffering a grade three left ankle sprain at Boston on Dec. 5, was averaging 15.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.72 blocks prior to his injury in 18 contests. Phoenix went 4-14 (.222) without last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year in the lineup.

Cabarkapa, the Suns’ first-round selection (17th overall) in the 2003 NBA Draft, missed the last 22 games after suffering a right wrist fracture when Mavericks forward/center Danny Fortson committed a flagrant foul, penalty two on his dunk attempt with 2:58 left in the fourth quarter on Nov. 26. The Suns went 5-17 (.227) since he was placed on the injured list on Nov. 28.

Maciej Lampe (MAH-chick LOMP-ay), who was acquired Monday in an eight-player trade with New York, was placed on the injured list with back spasms. The 18-year-old forward/center has yet to make his regular season debut this season after the Knicks placed him on the injured list with shin splints on Oct. 27.

Tonight’s game will be televised locally on Fox Sports Net Arizona and nationally on ESPN.

That is good news, but I was looking forward to seeing Lampe in one game before Amare was activated.

My question exactly. Googs is total dead weight. Just this morning I was reading how D'antoni wanted to keep Lampe on the active roster.

Hmmm, good point. But if Amare really isn't going to play for another week, even though they activated him, I guess they'd want Googs over Lampe.

But you also can't trade a guy on the IL, right?

Right, you can not trade a player on IL.

They may do something with Googs, but I do not know what happens with the trade kicker if they trade him?

I would think the suns may have to pay this for someone to take him.

i bet that they are trying to ship off googs. It's the only reason it makes any sense not to put his slow white butt on the bench. This guy couldnt elevate high enough to dunk on an 9ft hoop let alone a 10ft one.

So much for McDyess giving him some real competition to scrimmage against... :p

He had 5 of 11 plus 3 rebounds in 19 minutes. For a guy who was supposed to be out for another week, he looked pretty good.

I still think he needs to figure out which guys to post up and which guys to play facing the basket. Last night against Vlade Divac and Brad Miller I think his advantage would have been facing the basket. Either he would have blown right by them, or they would have given him an offer them to pop that little 10 ft. shot. In fact I think he got his first basket shooting a little jump shot over Vlade Divac.

Maybe the back spasms are the result of the bench being too hard:D

He certainly didn't get injured in action.

Still have to think maybe something is the works to move Googs. He can have back spasms as well as anyone. :D

Who knows, maybe they'd already done the paperwork for Lampe and there wasn't enough notice for Googs to come down with something.

Or, maybe Googs refused to go on the list and told the team to cut him instead. ;)

Seriously, I'm guessing that the team figured that Lampe is 18 and doesn't know any of the plays yet, and they decided that they didn't want his first experience at AWA to be one of humiliation.

My other thought is that maybe Lampe is a victim of the respect that overpaid, washed-up veterans seem to accrue.

It's hard for me to believe that the team would sacrifice its hard-won "flexibility" to save a few bucks by trading Googs, but we'll see...

The thought of trading googs is to gain more flexibilty. They would trade him to a team like Utah, who could absorb most of his contract. They would most likely package a pick, so that they do not need the guaranteed contract ont he books.

The idea is so the suns save additional money this year, and try to get enough cap space this summer for a max contract.

Ooh, excellent, when was the last time "accrue" was used on this board? And sentences like "Casey Jacobsen really needs accrue cut" don't count.

I could do an entire piece using accounting terms:

Googs skills have certainly depreciatied over the years and it is hard to credit him for his contributions considering the amoritzation of his contract did not lead to a realized gain on the Suns P&L.

Hey, as long as I know a 10-dollar word, I might as well drop it into one of my 10-cent posts...
