Amare Stoudemire: "I like the role of leader"
by David Carro / February 14, 2004

You were the MVP of a game with plenty of dunks. What can you say about it?

Amare Stoudemire: The athletic skills we've shown in the game have been amazing and it all has brought a great show. But, well, that's what the All-Star is about and that's what we've done here. Just scoring a lot of points in the best fashion.

What play did you like the most?

AS: I think the two between-the-legs dunks. Both LeBron's dunk and the one Tayshaun Prince did after that one.

Talking about LeBron, do you think he should be Rookie of the Year this season?

AS: Well, I consider both my friends, so I would give it both to LeBron and Melo.

You have been very active during the game and this season you are putting up nice numbers when healthy.

AS: I just try to be a machine whenever I step on the court. And there is only one secret for that... You have to work hard, really hard and with great intensity.

It's going to be a tough second part of the season for the Suns in the Western Conference. There are no playoffs for you this year.

AS: Whatever we accomplish, we are going to do it by working the hardest we can to win games. Even though we are not going to be in the playoffs, you have to develop a good chemistry on the team and go from there -- next season and in the future.

In that future, it seems you are going to be the star in Phoenix, right?

AS: I like the role of leader. It sounds good to me. I'll try to lead my teammates to the highest point possible now that I'm OK physically.

But there's a lot to improve.

AS: We'll do that, we'll improve. It's just a matter of time. Being patient. Michael Jordan said that to win, you have to lose first -- and that's it. Give us time.

Anyway, the pressure on you is much bigger now that Stephon Marbury is gone.

AS: I don't think we have to handle any pressure. We just have to believe in what we do and work hard to move forward. Nothing more than that.

Do you think you are going to be the star on the team for long? Apparently, the Suns are saving money to sign a big star. Maybe Kobe.

AS: I don't think much about that type of things 'cause there is nothing I can do about it anyway. I'm just focused in the present. Nobody knows what's going to happen in the future.

What do you think about Leandrinho Barbosa? Being the replacement of Marbury is no easy task.

AS: Barbosa is very quick and has a huge, huge wingspan. All that he cares about is improving so that he can go far in the league. And he is going to go far in this league, believe me.

I didn't like those questions.

Somehow I got the feeling that the question about Kobe was intended to make Amare uncomfortable and the question about being a star in PHOENIX more about a possible desire to play elsewhere in the future.

Just like the question about "no playoffs" etc.

Amare gave smart answers however.

For a guy without any college education and an erratic HS career, Amare sounds reasonably together and avoided the traps being set for him. Not bad.

BTW, whatever you might think of Jacobsen as a player, he is a great interview. I don't know if the other jocks out Stanford come across as intelligent as Casey does, but he certainly stands out.

Hopefully his lack of education won't hurt him in future post game interviews. With a little training he can probably work his way to post game interview superbity:

- "Hey, great game. You really pulled it out there to win. What happened?"
- "Well, you know. Both teams played hard, you know. But we played harder. We just had to come out second half and really pick up the intensity."
- "What do you think was the difference out there?"
- "You know, we just picked up the intensity. They played hard, but we played harder. You just got to pick up the intensity, come out and play hard. We played hard, picked up the intensity and got the "W", you know?"
- "All right, thanks a lot."
- "Sure thing."

I think they ought to throw in a change-up every now and then just to keep them on their toes.

“Great game. How did you do it?”
“Well, we just came out and picked up the intensity, and stepped up on defense, and when you do that, good things happen.”
“How important is this win for you guys?”
“Oh, it’s huge. It’s always important to win games like this one. Hopefully, we’ll be able to take what we did here and carry it forward.”
“How can General Relativity’s principle of equivalence be reconciled with the low-acceleration force law of MOdified Newtonian Dynamics?”

LOL

Yeah, that would be great if you want his head to explode.

We should start a thread called "cliches for all occasions". :D

"This was a great a win for us. It will give us something to build on".

"It all starts on the defensive end."

"----- really came through for us at crunch time".

"It was a real team effort".

"This win was a result of all the hard work we have been putting in".

"--- is a great team and it was a real accomplishment to win this game".

Or there’s the Python version:

“Stop! Who would exit from this court must answer me these questions three, ere the locker room he see!”
“Ask me the questions. I am not afraid.”
“How... did you win this game?”
“We stepped up our intensity.”
“How important... was this win?”
“Very important.”
“What... is the average speed of an unladen point guard?”
“What do you mean, Eastern Conference or Western?”
“Huh? I... I don’t know that. Auuuuuuuuugh!”
