I think the six in the article refers to next year + five years in the extension.

Still to be answered: Can he opt out at any point?

On the ESPN board, someone listening to the radio said that Amare can't opt out until the last year.

Ah, maybe you're right. I think the point is that six years is how long you are allowed to have a player under contract.

DAMMIT!! :)

I would have loved to have him on the Lakers, but realistically, there is no way the Suns could let him get away. Props to your owner for opening up the checkbook and getting this done before it became a circus.

Stoudemire Signs Extension

By Josh Greene, Suns.com
Posted: Oct. 3, 2005
The Suns have said all along that Amaré Stoudemire’s contract extension would be a done deal by the start of Training Camp. Consider the matter closed.

The team’s brightest talent from a season ago will be back in a Suns uniform now and for the foreseeable future after signing his much anticipated extension Monday afternoon.

“It means I can go ahead and buy a crib and get set up for the next six years,” Stoudemire joked. “No, it’s been a long summer in terms of getting deals done. We took our time with this one and it just required a lot of focus so we’re just finishing it up today. It’s always been good to be a part of the Suns. It’s a great organization, a great team and I’m going to try and make them stay happy.”

After his coming-out party known as the 2004-05 season, the center-forward vows to better his “all-around game” at both ends of the court this season. While that’s no simple task, remember this is the same guy who earned Second Team All-NBA honors in just his third season in the league, garnered his first All-Star selection and finished fifth in the league in scoring with 26 ppg a year ago.

While no one was questioning his professional resume as he signed on the dotted line, Stoudemire did have a ready-made response when topics turned to bringing Phoenix its first-ever NBA championship.

Flashing that trademark smile, the budding superstar replied, “No doubt.”

Check back later tonight on Suns.com for more on Amaré's contract extension.

I find the whole thing very discouraging. We have commited the better part of $100 million to a 22 year old. He has no idea what to do with all that money. He's probably going to go out and blow it all on drugs, get kicked out of the league and then what will we have. Nothing, that's what.

Even if he doesn't blow it on drugs, he could injure himself on one of those jet skis he's been riding over in California. We have virtually sold our franchise to a 22 year old.

I hope youre happy now Sarver. You must gave it all away.

I see why you guys do this now, its so therapeutic.

okay, so after what season can he opt out? does that mean he's a suns for certain for:

this season ('05-06)
'06-07
'07-08
'08-09
'09-10
then can opt-out prior to the '10-11 season?
