okay, so after what season can he opt out? does that mean he's a suns for certain for:

this season ('05-06)
'06-07
'07-08
'08-09
'09-10
then can opt-out prior to the '10-11 season?

That's the way I understand it. He can opt out in the summer of 2010.

This deal is better than I hoped. I assumed he would have an option year in the summer of 2009.

I have been worried about this for some time and right now I feel a great sense of relief.

Great teams are almost always built around a great post player.

The Suns finally have their franchise big man.

If the Suns aren't contenders each and every year of Amare's career.....

i had assumed he'd have an earlier opt-out also. that is great news. really cements the thought that amare is serious about his commitment to the phx area. sweet.

 I can't wait for the season.

This off season just went from an 8 to a 9 for me.

OK, here's stupid me asking a Larry Coon type question again. If Amare opts out, do we get a chance to match what he can get elsewhere, or is he an unrestricted free agent? I would feel much better if we had the chance to match at least. :(

Hey, I'm a Suns fan. I've seen "supposed" dynasties come and go in Phoenix with nary a Championship for it. I can't help but be overly cautious! :D

Stoudemire will be an unrestricted free agent. The Suns will be able to offer more money than any other team, but he'll be free to go wherever he wants.

I know we can offer better raises, but isn't it true that (in five years) other teams can offer Amare a salary starting at 25% of the salary cap, but we can offer him a starting salary equal to the salary in the last year of his contract? What difference will that make in $ five years from now?

72.52 million over 5 years.

Funny, thats Joe Johnson money. Weird how this contract really puts into perspective how overpaid JJ is. I'm glad we aren't giving him that money.

I don't think that's true. Any team can offer an unrestricted free agent a percentage increase over his last year's salary, provided of course that they have the cap space. Teams won't be restricted to a "normal max" offer for Stoudemire if and when he becomes a free agent down the road. It's possible that the percentage increase for the first year's salary is slightly different between new teams and the existing team (the way it is for increases within the new contract) -- I don't feel like looking it up -- but if there is a difference, it is a small one (maybe 2% or something).

It's very hard for a good team to clear the $15 million or so to go after a player in Amares price range - and that's what he would be making without an increase.

I was just addressing the rules, not how feasible the plan might be.

At the suite holder reception tonight the CEO of America West Arena was talking about the situation when Amare signed his deal. Apparently they were trying to walk him through everything in the contract, but couldn't get him to focus on it.

Instead, Amare kept looking at film that was being reviewed in the next room.

So when he is about to sign a 70 million dollar deal he is focussing on basketball. Made a great story.

Did they say for sure that it was a basketball film? I can think of some other kinds of movies that might distract me from financial paperwork.
