That was a classic example of a journalist reveling in the opportunity to burn a public person who has worked hard to maintain an image of idealized purity. To a journalist, that's not just suspect, that's iconoclasm that must be destroyed. The rumor wasn't just rumor, it had to be the smoking gun.
I seem to recall Bob Boze Bell got de-credentialed in the middle of a game because Colangelo ratted him out as a non-sports writer. It might have had something to do with the New Times coverage of the drug scandal. (duh) The NT has had an unusual fascination with the Suns ever since.
