That's a fact, even if it is simplistic. The Academy has had this reputation for years.

It may be more of an artsy-fartsy thing than age. I would think the demographics for Birdman do not skew old, yet that seems to be getting a lot of acadamy love.

RC, Birdman is a great example of how a super hero movie can be served to the acadamy in a palatable way.

but it's not really a Superhero movie. It's an inside baseball theater/someone going out of their mind movie.

I'm still pissed I didn't get it as a screener. i saw it once, and liked it a lot, but it was MUCH different from what i thought it was going to be and i went in with SKY HIGH expectations. Really thought I needed to see it again to fully get the movie.

That's very simplistic. But still, I'm not old and I can't fathom it either.

sometimes the most simple answer is the right one. I truly believe that's what happened there. Critics were comparing it to Scorcese/Michael Mann crime epics... which I actually agree with.

That's kind of my point. With Superhero movies there is little variance as to what the main characters can be about. Therefore we (and the academy) come into the theatre with certain expectations of what the art is allowed to give us. If it's outside that box it cannot even be defined as that genre anymore.

A question to ask oneself:

If this movie were about a completely fictional character, would everyone still be as charged up about it as a movie?

If that had been the case, I know I wouldn't have bothered to see it.

I finally got around to seeing this. Wow. Good movie. Whatever your thoughts on the person or the pro-war/anti-war slants that the film is accused of perpetuating, it does get one thing really right.

I think this movie is the closest an audience has ever come from experiencing PTSD first-hand. The continual back-and-forth between tours and home life were jarring. You could see the soldiers become more comfortable in their element (the warzone) and you could feel their struggle to flip the switch when they were no longer surrounded by danger. That was an achievement in film making in itself.

Yeah, that's what stood out to me. You could see him slowly drift away from being able to function back home.
