Interpreting contract values is as difficult as skating on water.

You hear that Clayton (#15 overall) signs for approximately 8-10% more than the #15th the year previously= approx/best guess $12MM-$13MM+/- and here is Robinson (#10 overall) signing for what appears to be either equal and or less. Go figure.

But then again......I do not profess to understand how contract things really play out.

Not that diffrent from Suggs' contract last year (also #10). A bit less overall and a little more in signing bonus.

Ravens | Suggs Contract Update - from www.KFFL.com

Updating previous reports, the Baltimore Sun reports Baltimore Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs agreed to terms on a five-year, $10.09 million contract. Suggs will receive an initial signing bonus of $2 million and second-tier option of $4.25 million. He can earn up to an additional $5 million in incentives which are largely based on sacks and playing time.

Confirms what was anticipated......players will give up a bit in total contract value for more "guaranteed money" going forward.

I'm starting to think the reports of Clayton's package from TB might be exaggerated.

Didn't Suggs take a "special" deal that would mean less money, but free agency sooner? He was the youngest player in the draft, and wanted to hurry toward his second contract, and probably took a little less money overall in order to do so.

It doesn't appear so....

Trufant's contract:

Updating previous reports, Mike Sando for the Tacoma News-Tribune reports Seattle Seahawks CB Marcus Trufant signed a five-year, $9.4 million contract Thursday. The contract includes a signing bonus payment of $3.5 million now and another $3 million next year. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports the deal includes incentives and escalator clauses that could push the value to $14 million.

Now I remember: Look at the signing bonuses. Trufant had $6.5 over two years. Suggs had $6.25 despite being taken ahead of Trufant.

There was something about the sack bonuses... I don't remember the specifics... Whether it was to make sure he was in camp on time... I'll see if I can find out, but don't you think it's funny that Trufant got $500,000 more?

Here's what Len Pasquarelli had to say when T-Sizzles signed his deal:

Suggs, 20, will sign a five-year contract that, in terms of upfront money, total base value and potential escalators, is among the top deals in the first round, a solid increase over the contract in the corresponding slot of the 2002 draft.

"Terrell is 20 years old, and in five years he will become the youngest free agent in the history of the game," said Suggs' agent, Gary Wichard. "When he's 25, he's going to break the bank."

The initial signing bonus for the contract is $2 million and the second-tier option bonus is $4.25 million. There is also a guaranteed minimum playing time incentive of $1.05 million. So the combined bonuses, fully guaranteed, total $7.3 million and will be paid out by the end of Suggs' second season in the league, which is a very favorable distribution schedule.

In addition, the base salary for 2003 is $1.1 million, and the base value of the contract is $10.09 million. Suggs can earn up to an additional $5 million in "escalators," which are largely based on his sack totals.
