Probably not a good business decision, but I'm glad to see the guys who take a pounding get paid. Good for Christian McCaffery.

He's possibly the most impactful non-qb around. The dude can do it all.
He's still somehow only 23 years old, hes never missed a game, no offfield issues, and last year he went 1300 rushing and 1k receiving.
If there was ever a RB that actually deserved that pay day...its him.
Also, with them dumping Cam, Keuchley retiring, Thomas Davis gone, and starting a rebuild, they need a face of the franchise guy. It's similar to why we keep paying Fitz 11 million even though he might only be a 7 million WR based on production.
Anyway, I like McCaffrey. I hope he ends up earning every bit of that money, because hes a tough, exciting player.

You could have then franchised him in 3 years (2022).

I agree, but this is where it gets tricky playing the "its a business" game. Yes, the Panthers could have made him play out his rookie deal, then franchised him...used him up and then dumped him at age 26-27 without ever being committed to a big deal. From a pure business standpoint, it probably makes sense.
But then you also have to think about the optics of the team. This guy is a young stud, MVP caliber player just entering his prime. He was a 1st round pick of your franchise. If you are not going to pay this guy...then who do you pay? I think teams do need to make sure that players feel like the team values..and rewards excellence. If you go too far into the business side without ever ponying up the dough for deserving players, then you get players thinking, "this team isn't going to pay me...so I'm already looking for my next FA opportunity" and it is pretty hard to get the players to buy in to the "team" when they don't see the respect being given both ways.
This is the same argument you can make for all this RB, you don't pay them. He already was a #1 rounder so already more costy than most RB in the league. You take the 5th and than franchise him twice or trade him.
They overpaid in the long run, maybe not the first year but after 2 years... for sure.

Plus CMC is the Panthers offense. There is literally no one else on that team. Where Kamara benefits from a loaded team offensively with a HOF QB.

McCaffrey certainly deserved his payday.
I can't think of any of the RB's that combined his age, production, lack of any injury history, and lack of off-field issues. Zeke is the only comparison, but his off field stuff is bad.
McCaffrey almost went 1k/1k two years ago, actually did it last year, and I would guess will do it at least two more times during this contract.
I get your point, but like I said, if your not going to pay this guy, who are you going to pay? If the answer is "no one"...then thats fine, but players will definitely notice that and you will become "same ol cardinals" where players are just waiting until they can get out of town.
McCaffrey is going to be a stud through this entire contract. Sign him again at 27....I don't think so....but he will most likely be a top 5 MVP candidate multiple times during this 4 year run. Those guys cost money.

In fact Fitz has averaged over $11 million for a few years now and his production has been at best a above average but certainly not top 10. McCaffery least productive year was his rookie season yet it was on par with Fitz's production in 2017.
McCaffery is in the Tomlinson mold where their ability to not only run the ball but catch the ball are equally dangerous. You watch McCaffery run (again living in SC we get all the Panther games) and you rarely see him take a big hit. Tomlinson had a long career and averaged over 400 touches his first six years. I see no reason why McCaffery won't put up similar numbers over the term of his contract.
