At the start of last season, the Raiders two entrenched starting safeties were Tre'von Moehrig and Marcus Epps. Now both are with other teams. Moehrig signed a free agent deal to join the Panthers and now Marcus Epps is head to New England to join the Patriots.
Epps was lost in week three of last season, so he's clearly not in a prime position to sign a long term deal. But prior to that, he started all 17 games for the Eagles in 2022 and the Raiders in 2023.
The Raiders were not expected to bring Epps back. The team moved on at the position, re-signing former undrafted Isaiah Pola-Mao and adding Jeremy Chinn and Lonnie Johnson Jr.
Nearly all of the Raiders former defensive starters who hit free agency have signed new deals, many of whom found new homes elsewhere. For instance, Epps joins former Raiders starting middle linebacker Robert Spillane in New England.
