Of course your right man, and here's why.

If your team is 0-16 or 1-15, it's way, way, more than one player away from being competitive on weekly basis. Your team is basically in shambles. Add to that the risk that the pick might not work out, and it's not worth it to let your team fall that far to get the pick.

Just look at the Rams. They are the perfect example of why that strategy sucks.
Last season, with basically the same team as this season, the Colts were 10-6 and division winners. This season they're winless. Common thread: Peyton Manning.

And regarding the original topic in question, I think the vast majority of us realized how ill conceived the logic was despite a few vocal minority trying to convince the rest of us we are insane. Seeing our current group of 53 show dramatic improvement the last several weeks gives me a lot more hope than seeing Andrew Luck walk through that door or Matt Kalil walk through that door. Even if all of these wins "mean nothing" and we don't make the playoffs, I'm a lot more optimistic for the future now than I would have been with a top 5 pick.

I was nice about how I worded a text to a co-worker (Niners' fan) just after the game...

I said "Tough battle. Good game, man."

He replies "We lost because we didn't have Patrick Willis."

Uh, wow. Thanks for giving any credit to our team.

You play who is available. We have had plenty of injuries too.

So I reply "We don't have Toler, Rhodes, or Williams. You play who you have."

He replies "Yeah, but they all suck."

I hate Niners' fans.

Ohh really? Gee that's weird because all I heard from Niner fans all week was that it didn't matter that Willis was out because "We have Aldon Smith."

Seriously, on other boards 9er fans were throwing it out all week how they "wouldn't miss Willis at all because they have so many young stud backups and Aldon Smith."

Then ofcourse they lose and it's instantly; WAHHHHHHHH WE DIDN'T HAVE WILLIS!!

I'll say it again, and again, and again; you cant have it both ways Whinerfan!

when you tank the season, the light at the end of the tunnel is often a oncoming train. As mentioned, when you tank and draft the heralded QB prospect...it usually means that position in the draft also says the rest of your team stinks and a lot of times that QB never develops because he is surrounded by no help to ever progress or climb out of the hole.

I never hoped we tanked the season, or wanted any part of the Luck sweepstakes but I must admit to looking at the standings and giving thought to "if we lose we'll draft here" last week.
I admit, a total loser mentality that's been beaten into my head over the years. Most years the draft was more of a highlight then the season.
Luckily, I pulled my head out of "where it had been" and realized:
If we win, we're playing well.
If we're playing well, we have good (enough) players.
If we have good (enough) players now, we don't HAVE to draft them.
We are winning - mission accomplished!
DUH!

That said, we still need a LT. But instead of planning how we'll improve our draft position, I'm hoping one fallls to us in the 20's! That's a good feeling.

now we can talk about how if we held our leads vs Baltimore, the Giants, etc. we would be above .500. As Jim Mora would say, coulda woulda shoulda.
