I screamed at the TV when I saw that play "That's an illegal forward pass!" That play is one of his signature moves, flipping it forward to a receiver. This time he did it out of bounds, well past the LOS. Should have been a penalty.

Is it the play where he was going to be tackled and flipped it underhand to a tight end who almost snagged it but then bobbled it and it was ruled incomplete? Because if it was that play, I thought that should have been called a fumble...

At the very least it should have been called an illegal lateral. His hand was underneath the ball.

You will notice Wilson has a habit of extending the ball out as he is heading towards the sideline to try to pick up that extra arm's length of yardage. He does it just about every time he is heading out of bounds.

I think he was probably attempting to do that but got hit as he started to extend the arm, or he tried to do it and just lost grip of the football but with the extension of the arm it made it look like he was pitching the ball.

Being that he does this so often I would think teams would be coaching their defensive players to slap at his arms/hands every time he is heading towards the sidelines versus trying to hit his body, but then again with his athletic ability that could backfire terribly if you are swiping at him instaead of hitting/pushing him out of bounds and he stops on a dime and then cuts back inside for a large gain.

The problem is, more times than not there is NO ONE near him. :D

Exactly.

This was one of the worst officiated games I've seen in a while, at least they were screwing up calls both ways fairly consistently

It was just awful and it slowed the whole thing up. The game took 4 hours (I know because I only got an hours sleep before work) which is just stupid.

I know there was the injury, but genuine question here, can they not speed the the game up to catch up lost time. I mean as in half of the stoppages are TV based and the chap with the big orange glove winds it back on when everyone is standing around. I assume there are TV schedules to keep on track, or does the post game just get cut down as a result.

I think we're a bunch of whiners when it comes to officiating. Just like every other fan base in the NFL, they all think they get screwed every week. Our team is one of the least penalized teams in the NFL since BA got here. Situation matters, when penalties get called, but it is what it is.

It's didn't seem this bad even 10/15 years ago in terms of time and replays and getting together and still getting things wrong. I get there is more focus on the refs and the stakes are high but I should be getting better and more consistent, not the other way round.

Or maybe it's because it matters more now than it did when 17 points down in an a game in an already 2-6 season.

That's true but I think the reason we're seeing it more is that we're a good team now. Bad teams get used to getting hosed and the fan base does too. You keep thinking when we get good, this won't happen to us, and then it still does.

on Mike and Mike this morning they made a great point, at the end of the Jax game they ran up to the LOS, snapped the ball with 3 OL's not set, one of them literally standing up. The Ravens sacked Bortles but grabbed his facemask doing it. That penalty led to the game winning FG for Jax.

Mike and Mike said it quite clearly, if that was the Jets and Patriots we would be in day 2 of a national media blitz condemning the NFL for that no call. They actually reviewed the play and still allowed it when it's clear as day on tape they're not set when the ball is snapped. That WOULD not happen in a Pats game, it would not happen in a Packers game etc. his point is why are things like that accepted in games involving "lesser" teams?

I think because for so long we were a lesser team, we're still waiting to get the treatment the elite teams get now.

I think that's why the no call on the PI against Floyd in the Pitt game still bugs me, you don't see calls like that missed when certain teams are playing.

What irks me the most, (and I don't remember it happening years ago at all) is the constant conferences between officials, for even the simplest of calls....do we really need to huddle up to call false starts and delay of games??

The rules changed, a defense can be called infraction if they go neutral zone and cause a false start. Used to just be straight false start. I think they have to huddle to ask what everyone saw.

Another play that baffled me was Floyd's TD that they ruled he was out at the 1 yard line. The ref was in great position to see the play & completely blew it & forced us to use our challenge. Normally they call it a TD since all TDs are automatically reviewed & would be overturned if he had stepped out (instead they go pro-Seattle).

Ultimately it didn't affect anything since we ended up winning the challenge, winning the next challenge when they tried to give Seattle a 1st down with a bad spot & then losing a challenge when again they gave Seattle a 1st down on another bad spot on the very next play.

Love your points and value your opinions. But I disagree. To be honest, I don't think we've been hosed in any game this year by the officiating. Not on purpose anyway. There were some really bad calls in a couple games, but overall it's a fact that we're getting more calls than our opponents.

What I wish didn't happen is the unconscious bias (which is perfectly natural by the way) of officials who officiate good teams or great players. Jordan getting calls was mentioned, but really the worst offender was Karl Malone. That dude was built like a Greek sculpture, but anytime anybody, even a guard, would swipe near him, instant foul. It happens in football too with good or great teams.

I think we're one of those teams now, we're getting all kinds of calls we wouldn't have in the past. We probably lead the league in pass interference and illegal contact penalties against us. Many of those calls, in my opinion, saved drives, changed drives, and changed games. I can think of two pass interference penalties against us, just off the top of my head, which changed the complexion of games.

I'd also add that sure, if it was the Jets and Patriots playing maybe those calls don't stand like they did in Baltimore/Jacksonville, but I chalk that up to them being bad teams and being sent a bad officiating crew to do the game. Are you going to send your best officials to the crappy games with the worst teams, or are you going to send them to marquee matchups? The worst officials learn by officiating the worst teams because those teams' mistakes are more blatant. The best officials are almost required when two good teams play, because there's so much garbage and little tricks and technique's great teams do that only a vet official can spot. That's primarily a playoff thing, but the point is the same.

I know the officials aren't biased because when the replacement refs came in it sucked and football sucked and my life sucked. It was all good for the first game or two, all smiles, who needs the old refs, screw them, this is great, finally teams can play football. That lasted until it started to suck. It became obvious how hard it is to officiate a game.

And honestly, they're making these calls within split seconds, it amazes me. You see it on replay and you're like oh okay, and then see it in full speed and you're like holy crap, how did he even see that?

The officiating in the NFL, in my opinion, is some of the best officiating in any sport. What sucks is some of the vagueness about the rules. And that's what bothers me, because I can't get it out of my head that the reason they left that vagueness in there is for betting, throwing games, influencing games, etc. That bothers me a lot. It's a multi-multi-multi X 32 billion dollar industry, and their lawyers seem to be on point and specific with everything else, but when it comes to some of the rules they're suddenly vague, and that bugs the crap out of me because of what it implies.

I understand that..... It just seems like every call now requires a 2 to 3 minute conference, I understand the need to discuss and confer on more difficult calls, but even a blatant hold with one flag on the field seems to cause a conference.

It wasn't that long ago, you would see a flag, and 5 to 10 seconds later you would be hearing the call....that almost never happens anymore.

It's just another annoyance, in a game that seems to have its pace slowed down a little bit more every year.

Field goal made: Tv timeout
8 minutes of commercials
kickoff:
Another commercial break
First down play......crap! Play clock is running out...."Timeout"

Thank god for DVR's. :D

ON the Jax game, they actually reviewed the last play and still didn't overturn the call because 3 Jax players weren't set at the snap.

That's why I think it goes beyond good or bad set of refs, it was actually reviewed and they still didn't call it because they don't want to make the refs look bad and they don't think that game matters.
