I was thinking about this on the drive home this afternoon.

Do you think that with an uncapped season and a (probable) lockout in 2011 Anquan Boldin will be available at a (steep?) discount if he's willing to sign an in-season extension?

Q's going to be 30 early next season. It's possible (likely?) that there's a lockout in 2011 and no one is going to be signing free agents and giving out guaranteed money when they're not going to play that season (maybe). Is anyone going to pay $8 million a year to a guy who is going to miss 2-3 games a season and be a no-show for a playoff game or two?

If I were a veteran who was going to be a free agent in 2011 and I had a fair-ish contract on the table, I would sign it now and guess that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Q could get $5 million per year and $10 million guaranteed on a three-year extension and have some money to take into the lockout.

Just an idea, if we're planning on keeping him around, which I'm guessing the coach and ownership probably disagree about.

This is where I think Q's head is at:

Rationally: he ought to take that deal.

Emotionally: I think he would only take it from another team.

I think he can do better than $5 miilion a year and $10 million guaranteed - even from the Cards...
In any case, it would have to involve a player taking a close and realistic view of things, an agent who also is willing to accept "less", and a team that is willing to offer a "fair" price. Are any of those three dynamics in play here? I'm not sure...

Because I think that ownership loves Anquan Boldin as a person. I think they love having him around the complex and having him be associated with the Cardinal brand. They're emotionally involved with the player, and probably can't see his actual on-the-field value.

The Coaching Staff comes from Pittsburgh, where ownership knows and loves its players, but also understands the value of certain players and certain positions. If the contract demands of the player outpace his value to the franchise on the field, he's going to have the opportunity to get that value elsewhere. Pittsburgh has been IMMENSELY successful letting popular players leave. It's probably been the key to their success as a small-market team over the past 20 years.

To put it another way, if you've been listening to Cardinals Underground all season: Ownership is Ron Wolfley, Coaching staff is Darren Urban.

well - the Pitt / Philly / NE model says this: as much we like Q, we have another guy at the position who is due to receive a raise as well: Steve Breaston. And did we mention that Steve is 5 years younger then Q, doesnt miss games and is a better down the field threat?
Thank you Q-- best of luck elsewhere.

Its coldhearted, but has to be done.

I also think Doucet has shown his worth as a tough physical receiver who can replace Boldin.

Gotcha. I was thinking you meant the other way around, that the coaching staff wanted to keep him but the owners didn't want to pay him. I agree with you. We need to follow the Pittsburgh model if we want to continue to be successful.

When you look at it from a perspective of position rather than individual we are DEEP at W/O and have big needs elswhere such as DB and LB. I believe we will spend the money to improve the team as a whole which means Mr. Boldin may well be traded.
