Well, we do have a first round draft pick this year. Any of the 3 USC linebackers would have filled a void (move Highsmith to OLB and insert a LB). There is also this time period to sign players they call Dansby. I'm sure a cheaper alternative is available than signing Dansby to a long term contract. I like Dansby quite a bit, but he's not worth the money he makes, and certainly is not irreplaceable.
This coaching staff has shown that they aren't going to plug a rookie into the starting line-up, no matter how high they were drafted.
Is Dansby the best MLB in the NFC? No, I don't think so either. But he is a complete LB in that he can rush the passer, drop into coverage, and stuff the run. He's got size and speed that gives us a lot of options when he is on the field. He fits our defense very well, and I feel he is as important to our D as Wilson.
Yes, we've been over-paying for him for the last two years; but, I don't see anyone likely to be available without suffering a big drop-off in production. I don't think Highsmith can or will replace him as I don't see Whiz/Davis wanting to get smaller at the MLB spot.
For the record, I expect Dansby will finally get his Pace/A.Smith money elsewhere next year. I just hope our D doesn't take the big step backwards that I think is going to happen.
Go Cards!!!
