Any chance we keep Edge?

Kent Somers writes today that the cards are in no hurry to release Edge and don't need the $5M cap space. With the instability in our RB position and the fact that he and Hightower are the only ones that are currently signed, what are the chances that if the team can't find someone in the draft or through free agency, they hold onto him and make him play out the final year of his contract?

Is there any trade value left in Edge? Should he just be released outright? Would he hold out otherwise?

I like Edgerrin James. If the cardinals are going to release him, then release him so he can find another team to play with. Do what the Jags did with Fred Taylor.

Edge is gone. Count on it. This is one thing about Rod Graves that really peeves me. Edge as "hostage" continues. Last year it was necessary. Now it's clearly not.

Good guy, but Hightower is nearly the same player at a fraction of the cost. Now the Cards need to add a speed back.

They might hold him until they decide what to do with Arrington. They have the potential to do some locker room damage if they jerk him around. Between Boldin and Edge you have two team favorites and guys like Wilson, Dockett and Dansby will be watching this.

Concur. Darren Urban agrees. No way he ever comes back. Edge pissed off Whisenhunt thoroughly. Not releasing him early may be payback and it might also be an overt message to Rosenhaus to remind him he is an agent, not our GM.

Not really. Edge sees holes. TH doesn't. Edge got screwed last season and it would be nice to see him play one more year. It is no coincidence that the playoff run included a heavy dose of edge and the losing streak contained the opposite.

Keeping him would be bad for both us and Edge. If we do, management will have another thing to be called out for.

Lets remember TH was a late round pick.....The cards hopefully will resign JJ thats two change of pace backs right there......I feel another drafted running back will come from the late rounds ...as long as the line can create holes(i.e denver 1995-2005) and the playoff CARDS. Lets take the best players available and build from that.

We didn't have much Edge in the Super Bowl.

He's made it clear that he doesn't want to be here. Show a little style and release him early.

Take note NO TEAM is rushing to sign anyone now..nor will they until the dust settles. These once prime time backs and Lord knows they all were are on the down side of the slippery slope, They were "great" at a position that has a relatively short shelf life because of the pounding they take over 16 games and as much as 25 times 5-10 years....tough game.

Screw him! He doesn't want to be here, too bad!
You have a contract and you do not negoitate the terms.
What?
Does he need to buy "another" Lamborghini?

IMO it is more about the message it sends to the rest of the players in the league. If we know we aren't going to keep a player and we force him to stay on the roster longer so that he has less time to find a new team that gives us a negative image vs. treating them better. If it was just about Edge then yes screw him, but it isn't.

Send a message to guys that play a game?
Miilliionaires that play a game!
Color me not impressed!
I worry about paying my bills and I am supposed to be concerned about Edge?
PLEASE?

I am so sick about hearing this argument I could puke!

I cannot do their job but you know what? They could not do mine either.
Why, should I sympathize with them?

You signed a contract, horor it!
If not, wait until the people you signed with decide your fate.

Do you have a contract?
Do you have the option to cancel it?
Can you afford to walk away fromn a million/multi million dollar contract?

I cry no tears for these people!
Why should I?

I signed a contract to work through May, but I am leaving my job on Friday. :)

There is no way we keep Edge and I think the split should be mutually agreed upon.

Bla Bla Bla. Yes they should honor their contract, but if you are a free agent are you going to want to go to a team that proves they are going to make things difficult for you vs. one that will accomadate you? Of course not. This isn't about their money, it is a matter of principle. Just because they are millionares doesn't mean you should be a jerk to them. That doesn't help us sign FA's. That just makes our team look bad from the players perspectives.

Smart money (translation: the mainstream media) says no. (He doesn't want to be here, the Cards seem to be moving in another direction, the $5-mil cap space etc.)

I'd like him to be back.

First of all, his productivity (or lack thereof, depending on whom you're talking to) was, in my opinion, less to do with Edge and more to do with the Cardinal offensive scheme early and mid-season.

What I like about Edge is that, when he hammers between the tackles, he runs with extremely low pad-level and typically will create an additional 3 or more yards after contract than just about any RB out there.

The Cards, in my opinion, need more than just a couple of quick guys who can make draw plays go and/or catch out of the backfield. There are certain circumstances in games against certain kinds of defenses where you need someone who can pound it up between the tackles. Until we draft someone like that or pick one up in free agency, Edge fills this void.

And he's kind of cool. (His teammates like him).

Keeping the distraction can't be good for the team. What do you think we could get for him if we went the trade route? Anything we'd get would be better than keeping a distraction on the team. Might as well give him whats he wants and let him go.

Perfectly stated! The Cards do themselves no good in player perception dragging their feet on this if your going to release him do it already.

He's worthless a trade asset.

And he's not as big a distraction as the fans think.
