Listening on 98.7 right now and they're discussing how Veldheer missed practice yesterday for "personal reasons". I'm really starting to wonder if he's thinking about retirement. Guy just turned 30 and is going into the last year of his contract. Combine that with the CTE report that came out earlier this week and there just might be some dots to connect here. Should we be concerned, or am I reading too much into this?

Linemen are not like skilled positions and thirty is hardly a milestone for his position to consider retiring... I fully expect him to play to his mid-late thirties

The CTE reports are very troubling, and could be a game changer for some players, no question.

I guess. At this point it is not like no one knows what is going on.

To be honest, I am interested in what happens when they start to look into other sports, other jobs, and the health risks involved.

If you are a football player you are going to get CTE, if you work in a high stress office with long hours, you are probably going to have heart disease.

No one makes it out of here alive, and life will find its way to take its pound of flesh before you go.

Not to say that knowledge of what you are risking is not 100% beneficial, it is. It allows people to make decisions and as you say, it could be a game changer for some players who may have other options to make money.

For others with no other options, the football field to a football player is the what the Bering sea is to a crab fisherman.

They are going to get a lot of holding calls if they do that.

Offensive linemen have a risk of concussion in the running game. You trip, you fall, and WHAM upside the head as you are falling.

Only one time. Running a tackling drill, I was carrying the ball(I was a guard at the time, go figure), I ran through the hole and got clobbered, helmet to helmet, right on the ear hole. I was dazed for a few seconds but never went down.

I hear you. I took a hit just like that in high school. I was a wide receiver and was going over the middle and took one in the ear hole. I was a junior at the time and the next year I gave it up to race motocross full time.

Much safer, you know.

I got a concussion in HS playing baseball. I was playing at short & there was a guy running from 2nd to 3rd that kneed me in the head as I was fielding a ground ball. Don't remember anything after that even though I kept playing. Next thing I remember was trying to open my locker. I couldn't open it because it was the wrong one. They sent me to the nurses office after that.

Cardinals right tackle Jared Veldheer acknowledged he took a personal day away from the team late last week to contemplate his NFL future and that retirement might have crossed his mind.

One of the reasons for that, he confirmed, was because of the results of a study that showed chronic traumatic encephalopathy, knows as CTE, was found in 99 percent of deceased NFL players’ brains that were donated to scientific research.

“There was some stuff going on and I was just trying to process it all,” Veldheer told azcentral sports during a one-on-one interview following practice on Tuesday.

There are gong to be many surprise retirements over the next few years. This is going to hurt the veteran players because teams will be even more reluctant to sign players to lucrative long-term deals with guaranteed money. On the flip side, if a player feels it's in his and his family's best interest to walk away from the game, then that's what should happen.
