anyone in the mood for my new plan? restricted free agents
oh well..I will give it to you anyway. I am not an expert on transition tags..but I am basing the following on how I think it works. We should:
1. Try to trade out of #6 pick and get 2 late round picks. Call new orleans..call the raiders.. if they are not interested..give up a player we have (shelton) and the sixth pick.. Give up our #6, a 3rd round and a player and try to get someone to give us 2 1st round picks.. Probably have to involve 3 teams..maybe someone would give up a 2nd round and a player for a first that would give our trading partner 2 firsts.. Not sure how we would do it..but I would get 2 1st round picks -whatever it took - you will see why below.
2. Get seriously into the restricted free agent game. Go after players that require a 1st round pick as compensation (transitional players). I think Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila of green bay should be our 1st target. I understand that he could be had for a 1st round pick..If we make a big contract offer..packers have to match it - or he is ours. we get him and give up a round one. If we are doing this - there is no reason to have the 6th pick..which is why I am advocating giving it up for 2 very low picks in the 1st round..a first round pick is a first round pick in this game. I do not think that players have a choice..it is not like they can say..hey - we are not going to arizona... Hopefully, if we get 2 first round picks - we can get 2 transition players off of someones roster. I have not looked - but I am assuming there are enough players out there that warrant this type of move.
3. Get rid of our entire draft. Get 2 1st round transition players..then do the same for our 2 - 7th round picks. There could be some bargains here.. I mentioned tim rattay in a post over the weekend. Below are 2 examples today:
Redskins | Bowens Added - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
13:32 PT: With the Green Bay Packers electing not to match the offer sheet to S Matt Bowen, Bowen has now officially become a member of the Washington Redskins.
Saints | Interested in Rattay - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
11:04 PT: Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the New Orleans Saints are interested in restricted free agent QB Tim Ratty (49ers). If the team were to sign Rattay, the Saints would owe the 49ers a seventh-round draft choice.
obviously, we would probably still need a starting qb (blake). Why I think this works:
1. We at least know what we are getting..veterans over rookies. Our drafts have been really week in rounds 2 - 4..why not give them up for veterans.
2. We build a nucleas. By default we have 7 new players under longer term contracts (only way we get them is by giving them a long term deal in the 1st place).
3. no more - we drafted this guy..he missed camp and his first season sucked...
4. players (as I understand it - could be wrong) have to come here.. either the current team who has the players matches..or he is here. No more bidding/wasting time on guys who will never play here and sign elsewhere.
5. If we fail..and everyone matches our offers.. we at least drove up the price (for the most part) and depleted all competition for players (we by default made every other team burn through their signing bonus $$$) ..guys who get cut after june 1 would really have no choice.
I know we gave barrett a 1st round tender..but lets assume we did not..someone would have had to give up a 4th rounder to get him if we have tended him at one tender offer lower... there are guys out there that are probably in this situation. Teams gambled that no one would go after the players and gave them a lower tender than what they are worth.
Yea yea.. I know this will never happen. Snyder did it - but he is renegade owner. I heard the owners do not do this in part because it would drive players prices through the roof.. bidwill will not rock the boat - he is the most state the company line owner the NFL has..
Again.. I am not an expert in how this works.. based on my understanding - it sounds like a good idea - but my facts could be wrong.
