anyone in the mood for my new plan? restricted free agents

oh well..I will give it to you anyway. I am not an expert on transition tags..but I am basing the following on how I think it works. We should:

1. Try to trade out of #6 pick and get 2 late round picks. Call new orleans..call the raiders.. if they are not interested..give up a player we have (shelton) and the sixth pick.. Give up our #6, a 3rd round and a player and try to get someone to give us 2 1st round picks.. Probably have to involve 3 teams..maybe someone would give up a 2nd round and a player for a first that would give our trading partner 2 firsts.. Not sure how we would do it..but I would get 2 1st round picks -whatever it took - you will see why below.

2. Get seriously into the restricted free agent game. Go after players that require a 1st round pick as compensation (transitional players). I think Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila of green bay should be our 1st target. I understand that he could be had for a 1st round pick..If we make a big contract offer..packers have to match it - or he is ours. we get him and give up a round one. If we are doing this - there is no reason to have the 6th pick..which is why I am advocating giving it up for 2 very low picks in the 1st round..a first round pick is a first round pick in this game. I do not think that players have a choice..it is not like they can say..hey - we are not going to arizona... Hopefully, if we get 2 first round picks - we can get 2 transition players off of someones roster. I have not looked - but I am assuming there are enough players out there that warrant this type of move.

3. Get rid of our entire draft. Get 2 1st round transition players..then do the same for our 2 - 7th round picks. There could be some bargains here.. I mentioned tim rattay in a post over the weekend. Below are 2 examples today:

Redskins | Bowens Added - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
13:32 PT: With the Green Bay Packers electing not to match the offer sheet to S Matt Bowen, Bowen has now officially become a member of the Washington Redskins.

Saints | Interested in Rattay - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
11:04 PT: Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the New Orleans Saints are interested in restricted free agent QB Tim Ratty (49ers). If the team were to sign Rattay, the Saints would owe the 49ers a seventh-round draft choice.

obviously, we would probably still need a starting qb (blake). Why I think this works:

1. We at least know what we are getting..veterans over rookies. Our drafts have been really week in rounds 2 - 4..why not give them up for veterans.

2. We build a nucleas. By default we have 7 new players under longer term contracts (only way we get them is by giving them a long term deal in the 1st place).

3. no more - we drafted this guy..he missed camp and his first season sucked...

4. players (as I understand it - could be wrong) have to come here.. either the current team who has the players matches..or he is here. No more bidding/wasting time on guys who will never play here and sign elsewhere.

5. If we fail..and everyone matches our offers.. we at least drove up the price (for the most part) and depleted all competition for players (we by default made every other team burn through their signing bonus $$$) ..guys who get cut after june 1 would really have no choice.

I know we gave barrett a 1st round tender..but lets assume we did not..someone would have had to give up a 4th rounder to get him if we have tended him at one tender offer lower... there are guys out there that are probably in this situation. Teams gambled that no one would go after the players and gave them a lower tender than what they are worth.

Yea yea.. I know this will never happen. Snyder did it - but he is renegade owner. I heard the owners do not do this in part because it would drive players prices through the roof.. bidwill will not rock the boat - he is the most state the company line owner the NFL has..

Again.. I am not an expert in how this works.. based on my understanding - it sounds like a good idea - but my facts could be wrong.

I found this on a website:

In Gbaja-Biamila’s case, the first-round tender guarantees him a salary of about $1.3 million — the NFL is announcing the exact tender figures today. In return, the Packers will receive a first-round draft pick as compensation if he signs an offer sheet with another team and they don’t match.

I say go after him (only if we trade out of #6 pick and give up a late 1st round pick).

Overall, not bad thinking. I also don't know how it would all work but I do like the idea of getting a "known" player over rookies who may or may not pan out.

One concern I have is: If UFAs aren't signing with us, why should we expect RFAs to agree to offer sheets?

Otherwise, if it could be done, I would be onboard with this.

in the case of Gbaja-Biamila’s..he is only going to earn like $1.5 million or less if I read this right..he is probably pissed..if we offer him $9 million over 3 years and a big signing bonus..he would take it.. The price to meet or beat on the transition players is easy to give.. it is the draft picks that are killers..but if we got 2 1st rounders somehow (very low 1st rounders)..we could get 2 very good players..trade our #6 for a low rounder and get a player we like plus the pick. Then trade our 2nd and a player (maybe same player - who knows) to tampa for the last pick in 1st round.. it could be done..

I think GB would match that though since they have all but closed the book on Holliday.

depends..if we overpay (which we will do)..they may not.. if they do match - find another transition player. at least green bay just burned thru signing bonus $$ and cap space. we really have nothing to lose at this stage.

So the plan is to put every team into cap problems so eventually we will be the only team that can sign anyone.;)

I do like the concept you have going but I think the Cards would look even worse because RFAs wouldn't be signing with us or we would be waaaaay overpaying guys.

QUestion though: Can we get a mulligan on this offseason and start over?

Here is my new plan –

Starting today and accelerating come June 1 – sign every decent but over the hill player you can get your hands on – Holliday, Griese, Sehorn, Emmit, Antonio Freeman, Tony Brackens, Jamir Miller, Willie McGinest, etc, etc , etc. If some high priced vet gets cut on another team, I want his cell phone ringing with Graves on it before he gets back to his locker.

Mac’s opening speech / theme for the season is – “ Nobody else thought you were worth anything other than the minimum, if that – now lets go show them how much football you all have left.”

The "plan A" of signing young players on the rise is over. Lets get some guys in here who want a chance.

I would add big cat williams to your list..metioned on the radio..is westbrook too much of a head case still..maybe he has mellowed..one hell of a receiver. antonio freeman? en fuego..part of my plan is that I am sick of undrafted fa rookies and rookies we draft.. we have to have veterans..sign these old retreads to low dollar guaranteed $$ with tons of upside if they actually play and contribute anything.

It's a very good idea and would work nicely.

If the Cards did that too many years, they would run of cap space, but for now, that's not a problem.

antsports: I agree - one year plan..if it worked..everyone would copy it and it would lose effectiveness.. if it did not work..well..do not do it over and over..

this one says right of 1st refusal only..lets say 7th round offer. Would he be an upgrade over Starkey? he is way bigger..started all last season for the giants.

a 7th rounder for this guy..who are we going to get in the 7th round???most likely, anyone we target in round 7 can be signed as a free agent.. due to our weak team..we should be #1 choice for undrafted rookie free agents (based on our track record of giving these guys a chance..and that they would probably think they could make our roster over anyone else)..my point..why not sign a guy like this instead of a useless 7th round pick..started 32 games for washington over past 2 seasons..

I hate to say this..but I have changed to the sign emmitt camp. Why..if we sign these guys I mention to offer sheets..they will at least come to visit. Maybe if they sat down in a room with emmitt, mcginnis and graves..they would agree to come here. Hard to turn down the leading rusher in NFL history who went out on a limb and signed with the cardinals.. if it is good enough for him..it must be good enough for the KGB and tai streets of the world..

We probably wouldn't have to overpay too much in these scenarios.

They have a take it or leave it deal from the original team or an extra mil from the cards...easy decision.

And like you say, even if the team decides to match (if they can), you put a strain on other teams who end up making more June cuts at a time when we are the only team that still has 34 million in cap space.
