I think the answer is simple, Marv is fitting this thread perfectly because he is playing soft. I saw him block, or at least put his body in the way of the defender, but he does not aggressively hold onto to the ball after contact and more than once seen him run out of bounds before taking a hit. Now, I did see him get nailed over the middle but that was something he did not see coming. I am going to put this down to playing with the big boys now and something he will adapt to. In college he could get by as a finesse player, but here everyone is faster and bigger, and he will just have to mature. He has the talent and the body to take and dish out the physicality. I think he will and just a rookie having his welcome to the NFL moments making him play timid. He is having a good season for a rookie but not generational at the onset

Last year we had a WR core that wasn’t tall enough to ride roller coaster rides but could spread the field. Argument then was Kyler couldn’t hit a small WR. This year we went for height and gave kyler some big body possession receivers and he still struggles to hit them.

Marvin will be great in the near future. He’s a rookie who has been double teamed since day 1 - it’s not hard to imagine why there is a struggle. My problem isn’t Marv, it’s who is throwing the ball.

It's both. I mean how many NFL analysts have to call out our WR room and say we need to get someone who can get open on 3rd down before we accept that we don't have guys running wide open all over the field that Kyler isn't seeing?

He's played like Poo the last few weeks, the one dumb play we lucked out on against NE ruined that performance for me too.

But at a certain point I don't think Baldy, Kimes, the QB gurus etc are all wrong when they're saying Marv isn't getting open and he isn't catching enough contested catches. And for the record neither is any of the other WR's, Wilson is probably the best at the contested catches of the room.

They run different routes but Wilson has 6 less catches than Marv, and 36 less targets

What you are saying is fair. I wouldn’t mind a WR 2/3 that can spread the field- I definitely would agree with that. Call it drinking the koolaid, rose colored glasses, blind optimism whatever- the kid has made some great catches this year, enough to show me that I think he’s going to be just fine and eventually be an elite caliber WR.

I’ll concede that if the bar is instant dominant pro bowl WR from day 1 like everyone hyped he would be- he isn’t, and there are very few WR that ever were, even the greats.

I still like Marv a lot, but this excuse is tired considering who has been throwing Brian Thomas Jr & Malik Nabers the ball.

Apples and oranges - take Kyler out of the equation and you are left with we are a run dominant/run first team. Petzings scheme is ground and pound, and has rarely been a scheme to get Marv open.

Aside from “separation” which could be due to many factors- what other qualities/highlights have you seen that clearly in your mind elevates those two above MHjr? I’ll be honest- I don’t really watch a lot of giants/jags football- I’d be suprised if you do either. There is a lot more to this than just the stat line. Try to believe in him man

Wait now we're pretending he wasn't hyped as the best WR to come in since those 2? That he wasn't the hottest rookie name in every fantasy draft? That people on tv who advise on fantasy drafts weren't telling everyone to take MHJ higher than you think you need to because he's going to be a star and Wr1 on our offense?

I like the kid, and not it's not his fault he was overrated, but the fact is he's not as good as we were told he'd be.

Our top 2 receivers are awful at getting YAC. Like, monumentally awful for a starting combo. Marvin has 123 total YAC this year, which ranks 69th among receivers. Michael Wilson is even worse with 101 total YAC, which ranks 86th among receivers. To put that in perspective, Dortch has almost as many YAC as MHJ and Wilson combined with 216.

The averages make this look WAY worse. MHJ averages 2.6 YAC/R, ranking 139th among receivers. Wilson is right below him at 2.5 YAC/R, good for 142nd among receivers. Big receivers or not, that is incredibly poor.

Luckily, McBride and Dortch are actually pretty good at getting YAC. McBride is 3rd among TEs in YAC with 406, while Dortch is 39th among WRs in total YAC.

So, yeah, we have a serious YAC problem, and Marvin is a big part of it.

McConkey is great but he's not a speed receiver either. That's the point people are making, and Tucker made it during the game. The Cards need more speed on offense, particularly at WR, and we need someone to get open downfield on 3rd down so we don't end up throwing so many 50/50 balls. McConkey could be the get open guy.

I'm fine with the pick, I just think it's fair to call out what is, the passing game is a combination of the play calls, Kyler, and the limitations of the Wr room.

Reminder, Cleveland got Jeudy for a 5th and 6th rounder in March and then gave him a new contract extension. You do that before the draft you have much more flexibility during the draft if someone wants to move up, you don't HAVE to take Marv you can move down take another WR and get more picks. We had money to spend and didn't use it.

We do not run enough slants or shallow routes to get people open easy as well. Our receivers don't need to be yards open if your scheme gets them open...
