mine fought back about some of her shows but then I showed her all the garbage on hulu and netflix that I would never watch and there was enough of it that she was happy.

Also, once I got rabbit ears, she is hooked to all the local crime channels like justice network 12.3

So what is your total costs per month nowadays?

I had Directv but was going to cancel because of the huge monthly cost. I was at the AT&T store after they merged with Directv and they told me to simply cancel my Directv account in my name, which I did, and 2 days later my wife signed up for Directv in her name. Our bill is 1/3 of what it was and now includes HBO and NFL SUNDAY TICKET MAX 2017. It is good for 2 years and then, well, we shall see.

I was told by a friend I should feel guilty for doing this but I want for the old days when you could just sign up for the service of your choice, pay a reasonable amount year after year and not have to go through all the BS every year or two.

Got it free again... I think this is my 5th or 6th free year...

This time was MUCH more difficult.... I actually canceled, and went to spectrum for about 2 months.... Spectrum's TV was bad (almost everything I DVR'd had several moments of pixelation and audio loss, and the bundle I chose made me drop my Fios internet for Spectrum's internet.... Their internet gave me more downtime in one month, than I had experienced with Fios in 12 years... They have no contract.... So I called DTV until I got a sweet sounding girl I could actually understand (using customer retention)

All is right in the world again... But I'm seriously getting sick of doing this crap every year.

Internet is like $75 but that is necessary regardless

Then I have Hulu and netflix both at roughly $10 each. I also have amazon prime for shipping and then get that streaming service too. So without internet costs I probably spend $25 a month or something.

Same here. I'm just under $100 a month. 4 tv's in the house with usually 3 on at the same time. I have Slingtv which gives you the majority of the cable channels for $25 per month.

I have Centurylink 40Mbps down/20Mbps up for $32/month (discount offered on the phone after 2 year price-lock expired at $44/month)... it has occasional annoying downtime though. Cox has better quality, but it's double the price & the upload speeds are slower. I was ready to switch back to Cox's 100/10 internet until CL offered me that discount. I pay for Hulu Commercial Free $12/month & my sister-in-law pays for Netflix. I've got an over-the-air antenna on my roof that picks up HD broadcasts of local channels & recently bought a cheap DVR on Amazon for $25 that I plugged an old 1TB external hard drive into so I can record Cardinals games... the menu to set up the DVR recordings sucks, but it seems like it'll do the job.

I've schedule a few recordings & played them back just fine... the quality was as good as it was live through the OTA antenna. The fast forward & rewind worked decently, but not as good as a Cox/DTV DVR. You can pause live TV, but there are limitations... if you're watching something live then you have put it into "Timeshift mode" (by pressing pause) in order to be able to be able to pause/rewind so it isn't automatically recording everything you watch live like better DVRs do. I'd also recommend increasing the amount of TimeShift hard drive space to 4GB (default is 1GB) so that you can leave the TV paused longer if you plan to use that feature often. I haven't tested it enough to tell you exactly how long you can leave it paused.

Overall, the menus (& remote) are clunky/confusing, but once you figure it out then it works pretty well. They have a channel guide that you can go about 24-48 hours ahead to schedule a recording or you can manually set up a date & time range to record a particular channel. It only records one thing at a time & it has a 2TB max limit on the external hard drive (a 1 hour recording was about 6GB) & I think USB 2.0 was recommended. There's also an option to always record a certain show/channel in a specified time slot every week, but I haven't tested it yet. Plugging a HD larger than 2TB can cause the thing to crash from the reviews I read. Recordings are in .mts format so you can actually plug the hard drive into your PC & play them with the VLC media player.

I just got it last week so that I can record the 2nd pre-season game while I'm out of town. There's also a way to hook it up to the Xbox One like the Xbox TV Tuner so you get the Xbox guide, but you still have to use the clunky DVR menus & remote to schedule recordings. There are much better DVRs out there, but I don't plan on using this for much more than Cards games & maybe some CBS shows that don't stream through Hulu.

EDIT: One more important thing, you have to leave the DVR "On" for it to record things... if you put it into standby mode then it does nothing.

You should look into getting the Amazon Firestick and installing Kodi on it.

Thanks!

Pausing is dangerous. I did it on my Xbox once and after starting it again I hit a button on accident and it lost everything and jumped to the current moment of the game. If this is recording you are okay though. The pause on Xbox lasts 30 minutes and doesn't download the 30 minutes at all

Call several times and speak to several different people...threaten to leave (Assuming you're not under contract)...and get the Premier package for free while just paying for the Sunday Ticket. Works every time.

and then you have to remember to call when it ends or you get charged..having to talk to outsourced idiots trained to be stupid and not help you

Yesterday, I received my monthly Directv bill in the mail only to discover that I was being billed 6 payments of $62.99 for NFL Sunday Ticket Max...a total of $384.

I called at 7:24...and it took 4 agents (some saying they were supervisors), several 10-20 minute holds and 2 1/2 hours total to get a supervisor who immediately offered me 4 payments of $24.99.

The backup on calls there last night was voluminous...others must have seen the bills in the mail as well.

Some of the agents who called themselves supervisors were clearly not supervisors because they had to put me on hold to check for discounts, 3 of whom said (after a 5 minute wait) the best they could offer was a $17 per month discount off of $62.99.

The second to last agent actually tried to tell me how fortunate I was to have a few discounts on my bill and how I was getting such great value...but, all I have is the Choice package, the HBO/SHO/Sports Pack bundle and with three discounts (2 because of the bundle) which I have still been paying $120 a month for. She had me so furious that I told her to cancel my DTV subscription...which she immediately accepted and proceeded to tell me all the mailing back of boxes i had to do and that I would have a $220 cancellation fee. She said she was the supervisor, but for some reason I just thought of asking her if she had a supervisor and she said yes and that it would a 20 minute wait to speak with him.

By then it had been 2 hours and 10 minutes so what's another 20, I thought.

The next guy was super. I didn't really have to explain anything. Just asked about NFL Sunday Ticket and said I've subscribed to it for the past 17 years and voila he made the 4/$24.99 offer.

There is no question in my mind that this is DTV's plan...make you go to all lengths to get the right deal. Some people probably don't want to take on the hassle and just pay whatever the bill is. I just have to learn to not let it get me so pissed...that is as long as they monopolize NFLST.

Unreal!

I have the streaming package over here for the equivalent of $20.00 per month.

The trick now is to say "When does my contract end" at the prompt. Not a 100%sure it gets you to retention, but it does bypass several layers of folks who cannot offer deals.

Unfortunately, that is the game. You will not get a good deal until you reach retention. I bypassed much of the above by saying I didn't want any new offers just send me to your cancellation department. That is retention. I on average usually only talked to two people.

They will always start with a crappy deal. They hope you will take the crappy deal and that you don't know about their retention offers. It's sick you have to play the game to get good deals but I did it for years.

I might try not having it this season and see if I go into withdrawal or anything...

In past years I have been addicted to Sunday Ticket and enjoyed having all the games. Last season I don't think I ever used it other than watching RedZone.

Then again, that happens when the Cardinals are an epic disappointment, my interest in football definitely declines.

My contract has been up for a while, and I've been meaning to bump my package down anyways, so maybe I'll call to do that and see if they will comp ST or something.

Just paid my first bill with the Sunday Ticket. Total cost was $235 which includes the first month of the Ticket + the XTRA package + HBO, STARZ, SHOWTIME and CINEMAX.

Just called DirecTV and asked about the cancellation date at the prompt, talked with a rep. I explained that I got a great offer from Century Link and was asking about contract end date. Waited a bit and finally got some loyalty discounts of $45/month for 12 months + $5/mo off HBO and $7/mo for Starz for 6 months each. I then asked about a discount for the Sunday Ticket - cost is $62.99/mo for 6 months. She came back and gave me $17.00 off the Sunday Ticket per month as well. I asked if that's it? Then she offered an additional $10 for other premium channel discount (Cinemax, etc).

I repeated everything back to her, ensured that no changes occurred to my programming package.

Savings = $45/12mo + $17/6mo + $5/6mo + $7/6mo + $10/6mo = total savings of $84 for 6 months PLUS additional $45 for another 6 months after that. Total = $774 in savings.

Thanks for that. It helped streamline things. I was on the phone for a total of only 21 minutes.

Appreciate this information. I have to make my call soon as I've been out of contract for a while now and going to have Retention attempt to "keep my business" when really, I won't go anywhere because I need NFL Sunday Ticket for all my fantasy/Fan Duel and to watch Cards play from TN.
