Anyone see the irony of the coaching situation?

They ran Buck Showalter out of town on a rail because he was too "mean" to the veterans. He built the team that any monkey could have won with in 2001! Now as our team ages, the injuries, the trades, have resulted in young guys thrown into the fire in the big leagues not ready to play. I think we need a guy who is good at discipline, coaching fundementals, dealing with young players. I think the guy who would be perfect for the job is Buck Showalter!

Me and my dad were talking about this earlier.

Buck is AWESOME at building teams, but when it gets to coaching it he sucks awfully.

If Buck wants to come back I say go for it. But then after 1-2 years get him outta town.

I believe Texas is leading the NL West and has a boatload of young talent. Why in the world would Buck Showalter want to come back to the mess that is the Arizona D-Backs?

I also disagree with your statement that any monkey could have won with the 2001 team. Do you remember that year?

They lost 3 out of 5 starting pitchers the first week of the season - all but BA for the whole season? They lost Matt Mantei the next week, then Matt Williams for most of the season. How many weeks to injury were lost to Morgan and Swindell?

I wasn't crazy with the way Brenly managed the World Series, but to get a team to the playoffs that had at various times Robert Ellis and Bobby Witt as their 4th and 5th starters and then Albie Lopez the 2nd half and a bullpen Troy Browhawn and Eric Sabel had over 100 innings pitched was pretty remarkable.

But he WON the World Series - and he did it at home in perhaps the greatest Game 7 ever - when he could so easily have put it away in Yankee stadium, thus depriving AZ fans of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. :D

I'd nab Showalter as a GM definitely, not as a manager - but he won't ever come back here.

Buck Showalter was fired because of his constant power play against Joe, Jr.

What Buck didn't realize was that the GM is Jerry's puppet. To challenge Joe was to challenge Jerry.

Showalter lost. There's no way Jerry is going to bring back an independent thinker, even if he's not the control freak that Buck was.

Just look at the Suns Head Coaching position. Every one has been a "yes" man. Cotton came the closest to independent thinking, and he's sublimated it for Jerry.

And General Manager? First Jerry, then his son.

I don't ever want to see Showalter come back. He's not a complete Manager. But, even if I did, Jerry would never bring a strong willed person into his existing operation.

Hiring Showalter was more a result of Jerry's obsession with the Yankees.

BC, that kind of argument would get you disinvited on the Suns board. :)

However, my guess is Garagiola gets fired at the end of this year.

:notworthy :notworthy God, I hope it's no later than that. But think of all the damage he can do in the meantime!

I heard a radio guy today talk about the Colangelo organizations' sentimentality, which is why they go for veterans, retreads, internal hirings, overpaying for the talent/skill level because of a perceived nostalgic or emotional element - he was referring to Steve Nash, but he made the point that it clearly applies to the DBacks as well. I'd say JoeBlows has refined it to an art form.

Joe, Jr., would be fired only if Jerry needs a scapegoat for where he himself has led the team. Or if Jerry is removed from power.

Otherwise, as long as Jerry is at the top, he's going to keep a previously inexperienced "Yes" man as GM. Yup, just like Bryan with the Suns.

It wasn't Joe who met with Richie Sexson yesterday and issued comments to the Press. It was Jerry.

And Jerry was clearly leading the Press conference yesterday, allowing Joe a couple of minutes to support a few of his comments.

Whats up with AZ? Every team here has had their coaches fired only to continue their downward spirals?? :(

I maintain that Brenly was NEVER THE SAME after the second loss in NY. All he did was sit there in the same spot and stare. That's ALL he did every game after that. He used to be the "funny guy" with few rules, but after that I noticed all he does is sit there is the same spot, he stopped talking to anyone, stopped taking the lineup card out. I think Bob Melvin leaving may have had something to do with his change.
