A Washington State University official says Portland State basketball coach Ken Bone will become the new coach of the Cougars.

Bone will replace Tony Bennett, who last week left for Virginia. The official requested anonymity because the school was not ready to announce the news formally. A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday.

Bone did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press.

Bone has led Portland State of the Big Sky Conference to two consecutive NCAA basketball tournaments.

You get what you can. Wazzu was the lucky recipient of Dick Bennett wanting to set his son up. Dick was a legendary defensive mastermind. Tony grew into the role nicely.

Bone's bounced around in the bush leagues for a long time before hitting on some success at Portland. I think it's a tough job. Good luck to him.
