A person with direct knowledge of the NHL's decision says the league has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for expansion, provided organizers can come up with a $500 million fee.

The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because details have not been released by the league ahead of its Board of Governors meeting on June 22 in Las Vegas. Quebec City was also considered for expansion.

A second person who had been briefed on the decision said Las Vegas was a "done deal" following the recommendation of the NHL's executive committee.

The 2017-18 season would be the earliest the league would expand.

People are speculating the Black Knights due to the owners, but should definitely be the Las Vegas Aces!

Las Vegas Smokin' Aces has a great ring to it :) And people think AZ was a bad place for the NHL.

But hey, at least it's another short road trip and regional rival.

Oh, and I wonder if they might eye Maloney for GM.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
Actually psyched for this. T-Mobile is a good arena. It will be nice to get a major pro sports team in the Valley.

How the community support will be, I don't know. It may feel more like a home game for the visiting team.

It's official, the Las Vegas Black Knights will play in 2017.

Oh god no. The Monty Python References will be too much to bear.

Bring on the Vegas Elvi!!

This has serious merit. Especially if we call them the Flying Elvi.

... but should definitely be the Las Vegas Aces!

I'd rather go with the Black Knights.

:)

Looking forward to some trips up there to watch some games.

This should also help Shane diversify his airport photo portfolio with the inclusion of more NHL players.

Team name TBD.

LAS VEGAS – The eventual Las Vegas NHL team doesn’t have players. It doesn’t have a general manager or any other specifics on how they organization will be run.

Before the team picks all these important components it will need to come up with a logo and color scheme, which could prove vital for early success of a franchise.

“A systematic, inclusive process is key. No trial balloons,” said Matt Levine, the brain behind the wildly successful San Jose Sharks jersey/logo launch of the early 90s. “A franchise only launches once. Backroom decisions on name/logo/colors can be disastrous.”

Owner Bill Foley said he hadn’t settled on a team name or logo yet, though his West Point ties make him partial to Black Knights.

“We’re going to defer the team name for the time being. We’re going to go through the league. We have several alternatives and several different ideas. I love Black Knights, I’m an Army guy but maybe that’s not the right name for this team at this time and we’re going to have a number of presentations and proposals. We’re going through our local preparation process,” Foley said.
