I can only guess he will be a backup. I hope they are still going to sign Stephen Wisnewski to play center.

That would be a much better signing in my opinion.

Just saw that he's visiting the Seahawks tomorrow.

Shipley is interesting because the NFL's opinion of him obviously differs from the grades he gets from PFF. It will be interesting to see who's right (if he plays).

At this point, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cameron Erving strongly in the mix at 24.

He's Sendlein at a fraction of the cost. He's probably a bit more mobile than Sendlein but doubt he gets more push. Besides it's not like we're replacing Alex Mack with Shipley.

Sendlein will be cut. Cap space freed.
I think that's a good move. We need an upgrade at center no matter who it is. To have the Oline solid across the line would open up the offense to so many more options and allow for long sustained drives. And hopefully keep our QB healthy.

I haven't been this excited about a free agent since Adam Snyder.

Kent Somers on the signing:

Shipley will compete with Lyle Sendlein for the starting center job. It's doubtful that the Cardinals would release Sendlein and count on Shipley starting. Shipley's ability to play guard could make him the swing backup between those two spots. Ted Larsen could also fill that role.

Even PFF grades suggest he was a good player before last season and last season wasn't terrible from a PFF standpoint just not good.

I think it was for not blocking people.....not sure tho.
I know PFF grades aren't the end all be all of stats, but they would suggest that he must have doing plenty of blocking because he had a positive grade in both the pass and run. His replacement was far far worse (according to PFF) so I would have to imagine he was in some sort of doghouse. That or they went with Jonotthan Harrison in the hopes that he would be even better than Shipley, but that didn't appear to have happened.

PFF offensive line stats are horrible.

Look at the evidence on A.Q. Shipley: four franchises have given up on him. Pittsburgh (who drafted him), Philly, Baltimore, and now Indianapolis. It's not like we're talking about the Fins and Raiders where he might have slipped through the cracks of a shaky front office. These are some of the top talent evaluators in the NFL.

He was moved out of the center spot because Indy spent a solid draft pick on USC center Khaled Holmes, and wanted to get Holmes in. They shunted him to guard, where he was not nearly as effective, and put someone else in. He is, as has been noted, a less expensive Sendlein. A lateral move but one that may open other doors. I think Erving is very much in play at #24, assuming all the top quality pass rushers are gone and RB gets handled ahead of time.

Sendlein is much better than him. I expect that Ted Larsen has earned a starting job somewhere. I think that the guard position is more important from a physical standpoint than the center position. Larsen was very effective, IMO, at right guard during the time that Fanaika was out.

IMO, Larsen has the inside track for the right guard position, and if he loses that job to Jonathan Cooper or Earl Watford, he'll move inside to center to compete with Sendlein (who I think was playing hurt last year).

I think that Sendlein makes it to training camp. I don't think that the coaching staff has faith in Cooper or Watford to be effective, consistent starters. I'm still kind of hoping that we might draft Cameron Erving, OC, Florida State in the first round. It's a pretty astounding investment of resources in one position group (2 expensive free agents + 2 first-round picks in the OL meeting room), but he could very well be the best player available when we go on the clock,

If I were Kiem I would sign Wisnewski just to keep him away from Seattle!

Well, not really but damn, if they trade Unger for Graham and then sign Wisnewski. . . :pullhair:

#azcardinals will release C Lyle Sendlein soon, per sources. Likely declined a pay cut. Door is open for him to return but he'll test market

Goodnight and Good Luck.

Wonder About the Timing...

Is this release a precursor to something else where we needed the cap space, or was he just incredibly expendable?

I would assume we wouldn't do it if we didn't NEED the cap space? But thats just me.

It's possible. I don't think he'd drop to us in the 2nd. He's currently ranked as the #26 prospect on CBSSportsline's prospect rankings.

I am proclaiming this to be the best FA signing of the year, and predict Shipley will be a pro-bowl center

simply because i like the first name (?) "A.Q."
