Phoenix sports fans aren't very passionate, according to the first-ever DirecTV Sports Fan Passion Index, released Wednesday.

Denver has the most passionate sports fans in the United States, followed by Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York, according to the index.

Rounding out the top 10 were Green Bay, Wis., and Chicago (tied for sixth), Baltimore (eighth), Cleveland (ninth) and Los Angeles/Anaheim, Buffalo, N.Y. and St. Louis (three-way tie for tenth).

Phoenix tied for 21st place with Atlanta.

I live in Denver and that statement is very true. It mainly revolves around the Broncos and Avalanche though. Nuggets are coming back into play with Melo.

The one bad thing is that I can't stand John Elway and if they ever rename the city after him, I'm outta here. There is not a more self absorbed athlete on the planet; buck toothed, horse faced, used car salesman is what he actually is now.

Our fans can be flimsy. remember when the suns got into the finals in the early 90's? that was great, our fans were the best right there.

The Phoenix fans are inclined to abandon the teams when they do badly. This is a function of this being a town full of people from elsewhere. Very few people grew up here and it shows.

That being said, I think those of us who have continued with the Suns are either passionate or crazy.

I lived there when the Suns were the only game in town, after the city got watered down in the Cardinals, Coyotes and Diamondbacks it wasn't the same. That's when the Colangelos started charging to watch there games and he got away with it because of the following. Bars actually had cover charges if they were carrying the game and I paid it. That's loyalty.

I tend to agree with that view.

Every city has fair-weather fans and bandwaggoners. For the study to have any meaning at all, it would have to sample over a long enough period of time that the cities involved all had a roughly equal share of winners and losers.
