1 – Well, if you must win, the Niners are the best to beat. By far the most horrible team in the NFL.

2 – The win knocked the Cards down from the #12 pick to the #16 pick, and don’t think that is not a big deal. There are always fans saying stuff like “well, the draft is a crapshoot. Maybe the best picks are late in the round.” Yeah, they could be, but it is obvious that the higher you pick, the better chance you have of getting a difference maker. There is a reason why they have the worst teams picking first. It’s simple logic. Picking #12 would be worth a lot more than a meaningless win. #RantOver #ForNow

3 – Zay Jones have been a good pickup. Pretty reliable #4 or #5 receiver.

4 – Nice game by Christian Jones at right tackle.

5 – Let’s be honest, the Niners’ mistakes were what decided the outcome. Turnovers and penalties killed them.

6 – Elijah Higgins have become a much better blocker this season.

7 – I have enjoyed Murphy-Bunting this season. He reminds me of Dre Kirkpatrick in that he is not the best CB, but he always has intense battles with the opponent (not talking about the kickout in this game). It’s both frustrating and fun.

8 – Xavier Weaver had a drop in the end zone and forced a big pass interference on his two targets. Talk about having an impact.

9 – Good Lord, how this team needs a stud or two in the front five.

10 – I understand why they keep Murray. This was the good version of Murray, and what is plan B? His biggest – and almost only – problem is that he is so wildly inconsistent, but at his best he could lead the team to win against anyone. So, they keep trying to fix it instead of going the unknown route. I don’t agree with it, but I get it – especially in an offseason where the good alternatives are hard to see.

By the way, that exact thinking is also why there for absolutely sure is many teams that would want to trade for him, and that people are just kidding themselves by questioning that, but yes, that is beside the point.

Always enjoy your thought post.

Maybe if we could ask our opponents to play a soft defense Kyler could lead us to victory.
Here’s the problem. Teams have a blue print on how to stop him. They have a controlled rush and or blitz on anything more than 10 yards needed to gain. They accept that there will be times he escapes for a scamper or two.
When he escapes to the left or the right it looks like his hair is on fire.
is it Petzing or Kyler?
Is it Kyler or Petzing?
Is it MHJ or Kyler?
Is it Kyler or MHJ?
Whatever the reason, if it doesn’t get figured out we will wallow in mediocrity.

I agree, and those are the reasons I don’t think that they will ever go far with Murray. Sure, he can take them to the playoffs, but never deep into it. I also think that he often plays best when he is kind of being controlled by the system. I think it is quite obvious when he is trying to do magic on his own, and as you say, teams have figured out how to stop it.

However, his top level is elite, so unless there is an obvious plan B, I believe that they will go with Murray. I do think that if an attractive alternative comes up that they would consider it, but as long as there is not, and that there is a chance to make Murray more consistent, they will try to fix the problems. Is it a good idea? Is it better to be a borderline playoff-team, but never reach the level of the best?

#1, the next time he "takes" this team anywhere will be the first time. 0 fer in clinching or playoff games in his career, and he even chokes in non-clincher big games.

His top level for an incredibly short period of time is elite; he has never sniffed elite for a whole season. See the '21 utter collapse as prime proof. We can absolutely stop staying his top level is elite.

Well, he did take them to the playoff once, but anyway, your point is certainly fair, Stout. After all, if you are great then you show it over and over (which he obviously don’t). My point is that those smaller examples, that you mention, where he has played great, are most likely enough for many teams to see him as potentially fantastic. Most NFL coaches (and probably also Israel Woolfork and Drew Petzing) think they are God’s gift to coaching, and they will believe that they can make him play more stable – which could take them far.

Is it good enough? I don’t know. Certainly, I think that Murray is who we think, and that they can never win a championship with him, but was it better with Josh Rosen? Would I prefer a stopgap solution that will win them some games, but nothing more? I mean, absolutely I would like it if they could buy a player like J.J. McCarthy or, hell, I would take the chance with Justin Fields next season, but I kind of understand why they continue to hope for Murray.

Oh, I absolutely believe other coaches and GMs will slobber over the talent and think they can fix him. I think there is a trade market for him for this reason, and that we should be utilizing that market while he is still a salable asset. Full agreement with you on that.

He actually didn't take them to the playoffs ever. Every time he was faced with a game to clinch the playoffs, he lost. The only reason we made it into the playoffs was through other teams' help. We backed in.

Yes, you are right. That was a horrible second half of the season, huh? I really thought they would go deep into the playoffs, but then the home stretch came and reality set in.
