NEW YORK -- Washington Wizards teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other during a Christmas Eve locker room argument over a gambling debt, according to The New York Post.

Last week, the Wizards and Arenas acknowledged that Arenas had stored unloaded firearms in a container in his locker, and the NBA said it was looking into the situation.

It was during that investigation that a confrontation between Arenas and Crittenton was revealed, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.

The dispute stemmed from an unspecified disagreement, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Citing an anonymous source, the newspaper reported in Friday's edition, however, that the standoff was sparked when Crittenton became angry at Arenas for refusing to make good on a gambling debt.

That prompted Arenas to draw on Crittenton, who then also grabbed for a gun, league security sources tell the Post.

Asked by the Post about the confrontation, Arenas denied pulling a gun on Crittenton.

"This is unprecedented in the history of sports," Billy Hunter, executive director of the Player's Association, told the Post. "I've never heard of players pulling guns on each other in a locker room."

The Wizards said on the night of Dec. 24 that Arenas had stored unloaded firearms in a container in his locker at the arena and that the NBA was looking into the situation.

On Tuesday, Washington, D.C. police said they were investigating a report that weapons were found inside a locker room at the Verizon Center.

Now, the federal government is also involved. Ben Friedman, a spokesman for the US Attorney's Office in DC, told the Post "we're working with the Metropolitan Police Department on the investigation."

This will do wonders for the reputation of the league.

Apparently the only landmark here is that guns and gambling have openly reached the locker room.

I just read this story and am just amazed.

I can't believe a player would store a gun IN his locker at the arena. You would think that even if they had problems with people outside of basketball....they would keep the guns in their cars or something, not bring them into the locker room. I can't even imagine the shock/confusion on the other players faces seeing two teammates with guns pointed at each other in the locker room.

Somebody needs to create a VBookie thread to bet on how many games Arenas gets suspended. To me this is right up there with Artest at the Palace on the stupid scale.

Nah, a Lute-bashing :D

More directed at one UA fan who was bashing Bobby Hauck for recruiting thugs, something claimed UA never did...

I would hardly equate Arenas as a thug.. The dude lives in his own world.. Its been well documented he's a little off..

Was Arenas in trouble before or during his time at UA? Or is a coach responsible for his players' actions for the rest of their lives?

Just because Lute coached a national champion and is in the Hall of Fame, don't hate...

I guess sharpshooter and gunner also take on a whole new meaning now as well. This is the first time this year they've shown the firepower they have.

Well the good news for Javaris is, Gilbert only shoots 40%, so he probably would've missed

Wow Arenas is stupid. He's missed enough games so far in his career he wouldnt want to miss any more by getting suspended over a stupid incident like this. Why he had guns in his locker, I have no idea. Probably planning an attack on the referees.

Yup. A few years ago my basketball team won the regionals and we got tickets to a Wizards game. They brought us gift bags with authentic jerseys and stuff. After the game we got to go down to the locker room and meet the players and get our stuff signed and whatnot. As soon as we walked out everyone was quick to ask if they were the only ones that found him to be really strange. He was very nice, not thuggish at all, but very strange.

a guy who carries and pulls a gun on a teammate over a betting dispute is a thug, criminal, punk, etc, whatever. who cares what the word is. he belongs in jail.

This thread should serve as a reminder to all those who would prefer that the Suns disregard character when acquiring personnel.

Prosecutors: Gilbert Arenas led a cover-up, deserves jail
By Keith L. Alexander
Washington Post

Federal prosecutors said Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas repeatedly lied about why he carried four unloaded guns into the Verizon Center locker room and tried to cover up his confrontation with a teammate, leading the government on Tuesday to urge a D.C. Superior Court judge to sentence the star athlete to at least three months in jail.

In a scathing 61-page sentencing memo from the District's U.S. Attorney's Office, prosecutors offered new details of the Dec. 21 confrontation between Arenas and Javaris Crittenton. They characterized Arenas's role as a "calculated and premeditated" threat and not a light-hearted joke between teammates, as Arenas has maintained. The memo was filed to the judge Tuesday.

I guess I'm naive, but how does carrying around unloaded guns constitute a "premeditated threat"? It's stupid, but that's not what "premeditated threat" means.
