Citing that Gabbert does not know the play book, Arians has chosen Stanton again as the # 2 QB for this season. I express great disappointment in that decision, as Stanton had shown exactly zero improvement in his entire time here with this offense, and the ONLY consistency he has shown is that he is predictably inconsistent with his performance from week to week.
I am well aware that we have only seen Gabbert for the final minutes of three pre-season games, but he has out-performed Stanton by huge margins in that time, displaying not only his laser arm, but throwing accurately into tight windows. In those games, Gabbert, while arguably against the scrubs of other teams, has shown unique ability to go thru his reads quickly, and get the ball consistently to the right receiver in time. He has accomplished more in less time than either of the other two QB's and had done it with our scrubs as well as well. He has shown excellent clock and game management in those times, and has scored against his opponents more than either of the other two QB's-----despite not knowing our play book. I, for one would think that Arians would have been ecstatic with Gabberts performances in games, and would have seen the Gabbert's ability to run out of trouble, (with purpose and directness), keeping many plays alive despite his having to rely on his feet to accomplish that, (something neither of our other QB's have shown they can do). As I see it, Gabbert has been far more consistent with his play and success, than Stanton has, and Gabbert has done that without knowing the playbook like Stanton does. He has taken over the huddle and the roster when on the field like a true veteran, and has moved the team, scored on his opponent far more consistently than the others have, and has done it at the very most critical times during those games, (when the time was running out against him and our team was trailing badly). The fact that he accomplished this despite not knowing the playbook should be a huge complement for him in my opinion. Gabbert, at least in my opinion, has already shown what Arians has stated that he most wants out of his QB's, and that is the ability to command the game when it is on the line and to show situational awareness during those times, (which seldom has been shown by Drew Stanton).
Despite the fact that Gabbert had done all this, he has done it without benefit of EVER having had the same OC for more than one season in any year of his league experience thus far. I fear that Arians is sadly overlooking some great promise shown by Gabbert, perhaps simply because of his comfort with having had Stanton as his back up on two teams now. In my humble opinion, Gabbert has shown more chance for success so far in his scant time here than anyone since Kurt Warner did when he came here, and Warner was handicapped by not being the fleet mobile QB who could use his feet to get out of trouble. Gabbert even has that going for him. Just my opinion, but I hope this coaching staff does not squander a real chance to possibly develop some obvious talent that perhaps has as yet been un-tapped in this league, and given the opportunity to take advantage of his skills before being relegated once again to the trash pile.
